To Sojourner Of78The church cannot err in several ways,

1 - As a whole - 'The body of the faithful as a whole, annointed as they are by the holy one, cannot err in matters of belief (VatII Dogmatic constitution of the Church)

2 - In the exercise of papal infalibility - on the rare occasions the pope makes a definition to be held by the faithful made ex cathedra (from the chair). CCC 891

3 The body of bishops at an Ecumencial Council are also infallable. CCC891

Pope’s are human they can err. The Church has made some mistakes or statements that have proven to be in err. What or who exactly is “the church” when these statements are being made? It is not an infallible teaching. However, when the Pope (with his magisterium) speaks on matters of faith and morals his teachings are to be considered without err.

These teachings are few in each papacy, and are usually made to clarify previous teachings.

Historically the Catholic Church is exactly the “reformed” Jewish faith. Reformed by Jesus. Written in the New Testament.

The only question about salvation is the statement that Jesus made that no one shall enter except through Him. There could be discussion about exactly what this means.

I am still wondering what the word church means in the phrase “the church cannot err”, I am assuming now from what I have been reading that when you say the church cannot err, you are speaking about the Bishop of Rome, that he cannot err.
Yes, the pope and his bishops, when teaching in union with the pope, cannot err when teaching officially on matters of faith and morals.

The " Church " is actually made up of three distinct, but connected bodies of faithfull believers. The first body is the Church suffering…those souls that are in purgetory. The second body is called the Church Militant ( all Catholic believers here on earth ) and the third body of believers is known as the Church Triumphant…those Blessed souls that are rejoicing with the Good angels in Heaven. While a protestant CAN be saved and go to Heaven, it’s not because of their protestant beliefs, but because of an “affinite” relationship with our Lord and Holy Mother Church. This type of Protestant will rarely, if ever bad mouth the Catholic Church nor Her members. The Holy Catholic Church has God’s Word that She will remain until the end…but it may be just a remnant of Her past glory.
