To Protestants, why?

Actually, I have encountered a great deal of fundamentalism and I have to say there appears to be two major camps of fundamentalism. One camp is the genuine God loving camp. This group often looks down on and insults the Catholic Church out ignorance. But because they believe that Catholics are going to hell, they love us enough to try and convet us. I can respect them for that. However, this group can also be made to see reason. If they are exposed to good Catholics or to the true teachings of the Catholic Church, they tend to accept Catholics as Christians. Some of them even convert to Catholicism. The other camp is the malicious camp. People like Jack Chick fit this description. They despise the Catholic Church for no reason and their biggotry knows no boundries. They goes as far as to make up horrible lies about the Catholic Church, refuse to listen when Catholics defend the faith, and no matter the evidence to the contrary, they always believe that the Catholic Church is the whore of babylon.
We must remeber that not all protestants are fundamentalists. Many are very good and orthodox Christians who love us Catholics, thier brothers and sisters in Christ, and whose zeal for the Lord Jesus Christ is unparalleled by many Catholics.

THANK YOU for making that distinction. I may be gratefully Catholic now, but I was raised fundamentalist – my father was a minister. I was taught many of the standard mistakes about Catholicism, but never heard any tinge of derision from my parents. When the charismatic movement hit the Catholic church, many of our catholic neighbors became involved in the Women’s Bible Study Fellowship, along with my mom. For the first time, she really had a chance to get to know Catholics on a spiritual level, and it challenged her ideas. My father and mother changed over the years.

Last fall, when my mother’s close catholic friend had a stroke, my mom KNEW she missed Mass terribly. She called me up on the phone and asked med, “Couldn’t I just get one of those books they use and I could say Mass for her?” LOL I smile in amusement because there is still a lot about basic Catholicism that is so culturally different for her, and a lot more for her to learn. But the BIGGEST lesson – to love her sister in christ – well, its kind of obvious. I was so so touched… You really have to take off your hat to her. :tiphat:

Of course, she’ll always think we are nutty in some ways, but then, isn’t everyone a little nutty?
