Can you please cite the Biblical verses that show that prophets are always speaking the word of God, and have foresight in everything, and therefore are not allowed to be human?
Unfortunately, the standard that LDS critics attempt to hold our prophets to is not a standard that is based on the Biblical portrayal of prophets.
Caprica - The prophets of the Old Testament had several things in common ( taken from catholic resources and a biblical studies article by douglas stuart):
- They always called people to repent and to return to their faith.
- They always conveyed messages from God rather than speaking on their own.
- Their message of faith and repentance is timeless and applies to people of all ages and cultures, even today.
- Their prophecies about the future are always warning people to turn away from evil and return to God in order to avoid disaster.
The prophets of the OT performed five tasks (taken from the New American Bible encylopedic dictionary):
- reminded the people to fulfill their covenant obligations of the Mosaic Law
- became advisers of kings
- defended the poor, widows, and the orphans
- heralded the coming of the Messiah and Messianic age
- sometimes foretold the future
**If JS is like a prophet of the OT, then he would have followed the same pattern in his prophecies. **
Biblical references for prophets and false prophets:
Prophets
1 Corinthians 12:28 - Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then gifts of **healing, **assistance, administration, and
varities of tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:4 - Whoever speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but whoever prophesies
builds up the church.
2 Peter 1:20-21 - Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather
human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.
False prophets
Jeremiah 23:14 - But among Jerusalem’s prophets I saw deeds still more shocking:
Adultery, living in lies, siding with the wicked, so that no one turns from evil; To me
they are like Sodom, its citizens like Gomorrah.
Jeremiah 23:32 - Yes, I am against the prophets who prophesy lying dreams, says the Lord, and who lead my people astray by recounting their lies and by their empty
boasting. From me they have no mission or command, and they do this people no good at all, says the Lord.
Deuteronomy 18:21-22 - "If you say to yourselves, ‘How can we recognize an oracle which the Lord has spoken?’, know that, even though a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord,
if his oracle is not fulfilled or verfiied, it is an oracle which the Lord did not speak. the prophet has spoken it resumptuously, and you shall have no fear of him.
Revelation 22:18 - I warn everyone who hears the prophetic words in this book: **if anyone **
adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book and if anyone takes away from the words in this prophetic book, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city described in this book.
Matthew 7:15-16 - Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but underneath are ravenouse wolves.
By their fruits you will know them.
2 Peter 2:1 - There are also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, **who will introduce destructive heresies **and even deny the Master who ransomed them.
Please show how LDS prophets are like those of the Bible and not like those warned about as false prophets.
