To those who had sex before marriage....do you consider it a sin now?

I considered it a sin then and I still do now. I am not proud of what I have done but I cannot change the past. I have repented and trust in the mercy of the Lord.

Too late to expand the poll to 8 choices?

  1. *]I am Catholic, thought it was sinful before, think it is sinful now.
*]I am Catholic, thought it was sinful before, do not think it is sinful now.
*]I am Catholic, did not think it was sinful before, think it is sinful now.
*]I am Catholic, did not think it was sinful before, do not think it is sinful now.
*]I am not Catholic, thought it was sinful before, think it is sinful now.
*]I am not Catholic, thought it was sinful before, do not think it is sinful now.
*]I am not Catholic, did not think it was sinful before, think it is sinful now.
*]I am not Catholic, did not think it was sinful before, do not think it is sinful now.
*]I did not have sex before marriage.

Obviously, you’re not interested in the objective truth to the general question, which you already know. Therefore, to understand the subjective choice of others, more information would be useful. I’m not sure if I prefer “Christian” rather than “Catholic” from my above choices, however. This variation would answer your question by comparing the total of the odds vs. the evens.

Yes, I would change it if I could

To be honest with you, I didn’t think about all that, and it’s very uncharitable that you make assumptions about me like that.

Pre-marital sex is a sin no matter what we think of it.
Of course that is true but the question isn’t debating the morality of pre-marital sex, it is just asking about how the individual perceived their actions at the time.

To be honest with everyone, the reason why I made this poll is to see how many people are truly repentant, not that I’m trying to expose the people who aren’t, but rather see how many people still cling to the teachings of the Church.

Uncharitable of me to think that you know Catholic teaching? You have Catholic as your professed religion. My assumption makes you look smart and loyal. - i.e. you already know and knew the objective truth that premarital sex is sinful What am I not getting? I was trying to give you a compliment. I will admit I might have phrased it more clearly, but even so, that should have been clear enough. If I have offended, however, I am truly sorry. I still don’t know how though, so give me a pm, if need be.

Perhaps I overreacted. :o I’m sorry as well. :sad_yes:

God bless :byzsoc:

No idea what the purpose of this poll is. Sex outside of marrige is a sin. Whatever people thought of it in their youth, perhaps while they weren’t even practicing Catholics, is beside the point.

Objective Catholic truth does not preclude sociological interest in subjective human thought. He might use this data to formulate the way he teaches others in his life who struggle with this. I think the methodology could be improved, but the end is satisfactory enough.

Yes, it is a sin, because it is clearly stated in the Ten Commandments, “You shall not commit adultery.” Some may restrict the definition of adultery to only pertain to the breaking of one’s marriage vows. However, if you consider St. Paul’s reference to fornication (I Corinthians 6:9), then it is also clearly against the will of God. So why do people of moral Christian conscience engage in this sin? Because in our current Western culture, it is, most unfortunately considered not only acceptable but encouraged. It takes a firm resolve to go against the secular norms of society and stand for what one believes to be the right way, in obedience to God’s order of living. Some are too weak in their faith at the time of temptation to take a stand.

Exactomundo.

It’s interesting to see, perhaps, how folks may or may not have changed their perceptions of the sin inherent in premarital sex.

I can tell you that when we had kids of our own, who are now at the age of…well…possibly getting into trouble with sex, I look at it a lot differently.

No, the question was “…do you consider it a sin now?”

Which I do, since it always has been and always will be a sin, at least in this world.

O yes, that’s what I meant. Got it the wrong way around.

I think a different question that would lead to more discussion would be

“What was your mindset when you had pre-marital sex?”

And that, IMO, is totally dependent on how old you were. I think it’s pretty safe to say that if you were a teen, your religious beliefs were the last thing on your mind.

But if you were an adult (20s and older), and in a long term relationship, possibly even engaged, you may have had the mindset that you are in a loving relationship, quite possibly with someone you have planned to spend the rest of your life with, so it was ok.

Having waited myself, I really have nothing to lend to the poll. But those were just thoughts I had on what might generate more discussion.

I was a teenager. Before I fell in love, I was determined to wait until marriage. When I fell in love at 17, it just didn’t seem wrong. I knew we were going to spend the rest of our lives together and in a sense, I felt that we were already married. We are now married with 2 kids. This makes it hard for me to see it as a mortal sin, although I suppose it was a sin. I have confessed this, and was absolved, but I question the absolution because I don’t think I fully regret it. There are hints about it that I regret, but it’s hard to be sorry it ever happened when it all worked out the way I knew it would, you know?

Neither my husband nor I were practicing Catholics when we met. Had no intention of returning to Catholicism. We met in the 80’s - do I need to say more about it?

😊

Of course when I returned to the Church, I saw very clearly that we had sinned greatly. There was a whole lot of repair work to do. We married civilly and I had never been confirmed, so before we could be married in the Church, I had to go through confirmation classes and be confirmed, including an in-depth confession.

Along the way, I confessed my own sins as I dug through my 20+ years away from the Church. The Holy Spirit shows me grace and only gives me as much as I can deal with at a time…I have had to confess practicing witchcraft as well as a ton of other sins. I wasn’t much good as a witch but I did go around calling myself one for years.

Back to the topic…I DEEPLY regret having pre-marital sex. I have worked very hard to explain why it is so sinful and so harmful to my sons. My younger one has had his own experience and knows now what I warned him against. To be fair to him, the girl was actually the aggressor in the relationship. My older, more cautious son, I expect that he will stay pure until marriage. I obviously cannot share details of why this sin is so terrible and far-reaching, but just discussing the scientific facts has helped to bring things into focus. They will never know just how personal the issue is to me.

(my husband shares none of my regrets, nor has he returned to the Church. Please pray for him.)

p.s. I guess I would have to add #10 in the long list of possibilities above:

I was a lapsed Catholic, did not believe it was sinful, returned to the Church, now believe it is and was sinful.

I think it is a sin that I waited.

All those nights sitting around rearranging my sock drawer when I could have been out having sex. :le sigh:

Sock drawers = near occasions of sin, especially for young males.

Hey oh
