To what degree, and in what sense, are we slaves in this world?

The death of the just: Death will reach everyone, the good and the bad; but the destiny of each one is quite different. The just man sees himself in this valley of tears as a prisoner, serving a very hard term. He considers himself a slave in this world, suffering an extremely distressing servitude. He regards himself a sailor caught in a horrible storm. And as death means an end of his confinement, an end of his slavery, and is the port of his salvation, he ceases not to cry with David, “Woe is me that my sojourning is prolonged!. . .” (Ps. 119:5). He ceases not to ask with the Apostle, “. . . Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Rom. 7:24)

I’ll begin by saying that capitalism, as practiced in America, enslaves many within our society.

Agreed, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. And to your original question, remember what J.J. Rousseau said: “Man is born free, and everywhere he is enslaved.”

Are you enslaved by Marxism (or Marxism lite)?

There are many sources of enslavement in the world.

As practised today, I would agree that both people and the state are slaves and dictated to by the processes of the market place. Wage slavery is a reality. But morally speaking it is not true capitalism. Its sort of a reversed socialism, only in this case it is production value that dictates who gets what. That’s why the banks get bailed out and the poor man does not, because the banks have value and the poor man does not.

However I don’t think Capitalism in and of itself is evil, so long as there is an equal balance between individual production rights and the common good (true moral Capitalism), which is something I don’t think we have right now, and most people in the position of economic power would prefer that the common good had as little influence on the market place as possible if it means less profit and power for them as individuals. That’s why any hint of some person, organisation, or government, attempting to reduce the ever growing gap between the rich and the poor are met with fallacious accusations of trying to create a socialist utopia.

Such is the evil of the world; the image of the beast. Only a discerning spirit who truly cares in his or her heart about the common good can see it. Everybody else will try to excuse themselves by any means possible.

The Bible indicates that putting the poor in debt or charging interest are acts of enslavement. Yet this is the status quo in modern society, and like hostages suffering from Stockholm syndrome many defend it.

Propaganda is now our master.

Anyone who thinks a man or woman is born free is nuts. You want to be free then you have to be independent of everything even the planet you inhabit. So try not breathing, not eating or drinking. You will find soon enough you are a slave to your lungs, or your belly. Once you realize this little fact then all the rest is how to best organize delivery of the things we need and want.

You talking about things that are natural to our survival. People here are speaking about artificial slavery.
