Please answer the poll with your most common prayer designation. Then please post a detailed response in which you break down the percentages.

I am interested to see how people pray. For me, I would say the percentages break down about like this:
80% Jesus Christ - The Son
8% The Father
7% God - No specificity
4% The Holy Spirit
1% The Trinity

Percentages are a bit hard, but…

Just about all of my personal, spontaneous prayers are to Jesus.

Most of my recited prayers (such as the Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy) are either directed toward a saint or God the Father. And, of course, the Trinity as a whole is included in the “Glory Be”.

I tend to spontaneously pray throughout the day, though - and generally pray my recited prayers near the end of my day.

I was actually thinking about this a couple days ago, but for a different reason. By percentage I would say the breakdown is roughly:

55% - The Son
30% - God in general/The Trinity (when I think God in general I generally think the Trinity)
14%+ - The Father
< 1% - The Holy Spirit

The reason I was thinking about it is that it seems so few prayers are directly addressed to the Holy Spirit. In prayers it always seem to come out as “Lord Jesus (or Heavenly Father) send forth the Holy Spirit …” so the prayer is directed to the Father or Son and not the third person of the Trinity. I never seem to know how or what types of prayers to direct to the Holy Spirit. I really need to work on that. :o

When praying, I usually address God as ‘God’, simply, I sometimes also use ‘Father’. Interesting to see that nobody prays to the Holy Spirit? I could vote it actually, since I frequently sing “Veni Creator Spiritus” when nobody is around.

God bless, V.

I’m afraid I’m not going to do percentages, but I chose the Father, because a lot of the time, I like to pray to the Father, through/in the name of Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit (Who is moving me to pray).

So, the whole Trinity is involved, but the one I am praying to is the Father.

The exception to that is adoration, where I’m generally praying to Jesus Christ, for obvious reasons. 🙂

To the Holy Spirit who gives us the seven gifts to get us through life’s journey. As was said at my Confirmation; “You are now a Solider of Christ”, “Go forth and defend the faith”.

I said no specificity to which one, but visually in my head, it is God the Father.

My daily prayer begins by invoking the a Holy Spirit, followed by prayers of thanks and adoration to God the Father, followed by prayers of thanks, adoration and supplication to Jesus Christ, followed by a prayer of adoration to the Trinity. Then on to our Mother Mary,Saints, etc.
I would then say throughout the day my prayers are directed mostly to Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and Mother Mary 🙂

I don’t see how The Trinity and God with no specificity as to which Person are different options.

At any rate, I pray to the Trinity and would argue that everyone does when they pray to God.

This is a good point. 👍

I marked Jesus as that is the name to whom I address prayers most often, though do it with the knowledge I am praying to all three.

My most dynamic example was asking God to help me and He sent the Holy Spirit immediately to be with me. It was powerful.

To me, most of my prayers are to Jesus. I do pray to the Father alot, and the Holy Spirit every so often. I’ll give you my own percentage.

70% Jesus Christ
20% The Father
5% The Holy Spirit
2% No specific person
3% The Trinity.

I was separating those because sometimes I specifically pray to the Trinity and other times I am thinking more generally about God, rather than the three Persons.

It makes sense to me, but perhaps only to me?

I think I understand what you mean. There’s a difference between Who you pray to (which, I argue, is always the Trinity), versus Who you address your prayer to with your lips. For example:

“Jesus, help me”
“God, I pray that you might help me overcome this temptation”
“In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, protect my cousin”

And so on.
