Lk: 12:49-53 reads in part-
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth?
No, I tell you, but rather division.

This is a surprisingly different remark from Jesus. Can anyone shed light on its meaning? God bless.

I read it as following Jesus will put us as odds with people who don’t.

For example my sister chose to marry outside the Church. Knowing her marriage would not be valid I made the difficult decision not to go. She took it well but there was a risk that she would not.

Whats your image of the human Jesus? Thats the starting point

Apparently in scripture fire symbolises God’s presence, His love, His judgement, divine purification and the power of the Holy Spirit to effect change within us.

Jesus says in Luke 12:49 “I come to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!”

Belief in God can be like a purifying flame to the soul but since not all will be so purified it will inevitably cause conflict even within families due to the fundamental differences it exposes between people.
