I heard that the Bishops declared this day a day of penance in America, but is it binding?

I understand it is a day of prayer for the legal protection of the unborn, haven’t heard it is a day of penance though. Are they referring to the new Ordo or the 1962?

I don’t think it is binding under the pain of sin, (there is nothing to indicate that), but yes, it is a day of prayer and penance for Catholics in the US, according to the website.

To tell the truth, I didn’t either until I researched it. However, I have been keeping this unintentionally by praying some extra prayers on this day for a while now. I think many of us have.

USCCB:In all the dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. The Mass “For Peace and Justice” (no. 22 of the “Masses for Various Needs”) should be celebrated with violet vestments as an appropriate liturgical observance for this day.
