Today's Lectionary Reading 6/16/08

I don’t get why these two readings are paired together:

Why are these two readings connected?

Is there a good online Catholic commentary someplace that goes along with the lectionary readings?
 
The daily readings are not paired. Each is taken in sequence from which ever book is being used at that point. Currently the Gospel is taken from Saint Matthew. We finished Saint Mark two weeks ago. The first reading is currently taken from 1 Kings. We go to 2 Kings Wednesday. It would seem that the Psalm should relate to one of them, but I am not sure how.

It’s a fun exercise to try to come up with a phrase, or even better a word, that ties the three together.
 
The first is the example of doing exactly the opposite of what the gospel instructs us to do. King Ahab wanted something, pouted when he didn’t get it, then his wife Jezebel plotted to and succeeded in obtaining it for him. He was envious and covetous. Jesus instructs us to be unattached to worldly things and desires by giving more than is asked of us. King Ahab is the perfect example of how not to be. Our priest put it together better than I am trying to, but you get the idea.😃
 
But, who decides which readings go together? Why that particular section of Kings, for example, and why was it paired with the reading from the Gospel? It can’t just be random, right? Nothing about Catholicism is random! :confused:
