Reading I
Jon 3:1-10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
“Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you.”
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh
,
according to the LORD’s bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing,
“Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,”
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast
and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth
.
When the news reached the king of Nineveh,
he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe,
covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh,
by decree of the king and his nobles:
“Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep,
shall taste anything;
they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water.
Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God;
***every man shall turn from his evil way
and from the violence he has in hand.
Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath,
so that we shall not perish.”***When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.

Responsorial Psalm
51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19

R. (19b) A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.

R. A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.
R. A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
For you are not pleased with sacrifices;
should I offer a burnt offering, you would not accept it.
My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit;
a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
R. A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.

Gospel
Lk 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
***it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah. ***
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,

and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

.***

always good to hear a success story. 🙂 i wonder how many people repent when we Catholics suggest that they do… but then Catholics aren’t known 4 doing that kind of thing… 😦

it is interesting that it says God “repents”??? i didn’t think God had anythign to repent of… but maybe t he word was originally “relent”?? only a scholar would know & I’m not one of those… (not a biblical one anyhow)… anyway… some people nowadays think that this kind of thing is a thing of the past… God threatening humans… 😃 but they just don’t know… God doesn’t change… He delays his chastisements, but not forever… ***

Peace and blessings Bro Distracted, long time.
Who knoweth? He doth turn back, and God hath repented, and hath turned back from the heat of His anger, and we do not perish.
I am not a scholar either, this may help.
My understanding is the word use “repent” is for hebrew “nacham”
best i can do for definitions are,
  1. to be penitent
  2. comforted
  3. eased
If i was to look at the latter of the meanings eased of comforted by the actions of the people.

I reckon new scholars will go with your suggestion of relent, IMO not much value as the latter part of the scripture says this in Him turning from the action.
For me to see that G-d is eased by our repentance has much deeper meaning to the scripture as it shows more of the “mind” of G-d in comparison to action.

May G-d bless and guide you as you seek truth from His word.

yes, that soiunds better… that last thing…

so what do you think of peple who reject Christianity for this reason… becasue ther are so may version of the Bible & they claim that no one knows which is the right one? just wondering 'cause i know people like that…

There are multitudes of Catholics and Jews who claim that the story of Jonah is mythical, allegorical or just a parable because of the 3days in a fish thing.

Since The Master states that they would 'rise and jugde… I guess he was mistaken!

Scholars don’t know everything!

:cool:

Peace and blessings, sorry i never posted sooner i dont seem to get notifications???

I dont think the language, or versions cause people to reject The Spirit.
G-d chooses though many are called.

I do think that we need to be caring in our sharing given the bible we have today is so widely interpreted.

That is we need to open to hear others, and open to tell others but not get hung up on what only G-d can do.

I try not to get hung up on historical truth vs true lesson to learn, it does make for great discussion though.

I do want to know where i can read of the guy in the wale in the 1800s.

Sounds like it may be useful to encourage thinking G-d is bigger than we allow ourselves to believe.

yes, i try 2 tall myself this over & over…

right now i can’t seem 2 do much 2 tell pepole about Jesus… circumstances beyond my control…

but there r things i can do… so i try 2 do them…

i do tend 2 worry about people… not getting the msg or whatever… & it is hard 2 do certain things… & not know (ever) what the outcome was/is… gets discouraging, makes u wonder if u r on the right track, etc… but that’s life… as a Christian… :o

Praise be to G-d Bro,
compared to our last time talking you have grown much from what i see.
The Holy Spirit is working in you and sounds like you are really letting Him.

Keep faithful till the end, lets Our Fathers word keep growing your heart and use it to show people about Yeshua (pbwh).

Bless ya Bro, pray well and stay well

Maybe i got it wrong, in past you seemed very anguished about people getting message, in this post you seemed to be to be seeking humble love.

I guess i saw you more like the guy in a book, I think his name is Ezekiel (pbuh) reaching out to G-d abour message not being heard but moving toward acceptance of that is how it goes.

But my head can be a weird place so maybe i am wrong, but i do know i felt peace growing in your post.

Bless ya

Do you think/believe in a literal account of Jonah in the Whale for 3 days?

Peace and blessings Sister,
as offered in my post i try not to get hung up on these things.

For G-d all things are possible.
From G-d the word is to teach me how to build the kingdom.

Bless ya pray well and stay well

Fair enough Steven John,

Stay well be well

In the late
1800’s a man named James Bartley claimed to have been
a whaleman aboard a British whaleship the “Star of the
East”. The ship was hunting whales off of South
America
in 1891 when a sperm whale was spotted. Two whale
boats went out to catch the whale. One boat was
wrecked by the whale, one sailor drowned and one
(Bartley) was lost and could not be found. The second
boat killed the
whale and towed it to the ship. The next day, when the
stomach of the whale was brought up on deck and cut
open, Bartley was found inside the stomach of the
whale. A bit worse for wear (it was said that his hair
was gone and his face and hands were bleached “like
parchment”).
According to the story, Bartley eventually made a full
recovery (although he retained the strange coloring of
his skin) and became somewhat of a local celebrity
around England. His story was printed in popular
accounts and newspapers at the time, and has shown up
quite often since then as a tale of the “Modern
Jonah”.
This one sounds fishy to me

Come on i reckon i answered you, but please tell me what you think.
You brought up a non biblical account, so it did not help me at all.

Do you believe in the biblical narrative about the Jonah and the Whale story, or do you believe that was a compromised text?

I don’t believe it was literal to answer your question. But, I don’t go so far as to say it has no meaning in the message, if one is a believer it could be seen as a very important point about Jesus, if one believed he existed.

Sorry i was kinda answering my own curiosity of what the other posted

This is not a question I have prayed about but would err toward it is not a factual account, I can feel the whips of some of my Protestant bible literalist mates, LOL

That being said as i offered b4 for G-d all things are possible.

The “if one believed he existed” from a non religious view i think would be considered wrong.

I am not a scholar so dont take my word for this but i dont follow men and check stuff out for my self, if possible.

The NT bible is viewed by non religious as a type of historic source, i think it is referred to as pre - history. documents that were written with prejudice to account for that time.
True history docs are written without prejudice but some bias.

Yeshua (pbwh) life is also documented in non religious pre history books by a writer named Josephus.

So i think it is widely accepted a man called Yeshua did live and die, in a life that is consistent with the worldly actions accounted in the bible.

That does not mean history attests to who religious people say he “is” “was” is historic truth just that he existed.

Now i am a little different to most here at CAF it does not matter to me what you believe, that does not mean i dont care.

I am here to serve people with some things, you posted “so it did not help me” i did not realise when you asked me you were looking for some thing. If you want to ask more specifically fell welcome but not obliged.

If pms are a better place for you to do this that is fine with me.

If i have miss read your “so it did not help me” please know i am sorry suggesting different.

May all goodness be a with you.

“I will be who I will be”, you have free will so choose who you see
