Today’s gospell really hit home today with the recent election.

usccb.org/nab/111608.shtml

I know that he is talking about pieces of money but I believe this is an annalogy to the skills and abilities that God has given each of us and the other blessings in terms of those things he has entrusted us with.

Listening to today’s gospel and the burying of the talent I couldn’t help thinking of a spoof on a related topic from “the onion”

theonion.com/content/video/in_the_know_should_the_government

I also thought about the impact of the spread the wealth philosopy that is taking over this country. If this parable were to recount a similar story today, would we hear about a tax government agent stoping the three servents and evaluating the amount they earned? In today’s society the desire would be to take the extra five tallents away from the first man and give one to the second and four to the third, in the spirit of fairness. If that were to happen, what would the master have said to each of the three?

Royale Archer,

nice observation there

well, if it’s a Socialist Gov’t the man w/ the 10 talents will have his earnings pooled w/ the 4 talents of the second man…

…and the master in this parable would have to provide welfare to the man w/ 0

just my guess, but America’s not there yet

I was curious as to the mention of banks and returns on interest. Wasn’t banking started with the Knights Templar centuries later?

I am middle class and at least a third of my income is take from me in one form of taxes or another. I know that God has given me talents and I need to do something with them but it seems like much of what I achieve is taken before I can give it to my master: God.

I was very interested in today’s reading, too. I was looking for a thread on the parable. It is an intereseting parable. It didn’t cause me to think about Socialism, though, it caused me to think about how often we (actually, me) withdraw from others and so take ourselves out of the “economy of grace”. You know, if we meet someone hateful and withdraw, then we allow the enemy to win instead of continuing to love and immerse ourselves in giving.

I seem to often encounter hostile people who deliberately put up roadblocks to how God chooses to work in me, so it was a very poignant message to me to not withdraw and hide away from the world. Christ needs to be in the midst of people through us so He can work.

I saw the same thing and many others. My wife for instance has some issues and she tends to stayed holled up in the house alot. She has many talent that would be a bennefit to society as a whole however her issues keep her from putting those talents to good use. I am also concerned about the welfare class as it relates to this reading. They have many talents that they do not use but instead keep locked up as untapped potential.

On the other end of the spectrum I see people like Bill Gates and other inventors and business men. Thes people have outstanding abilities and have been entrusted with a great deal of resources. I see these people as taking their resorces and using them for t betterment of society as a whole. Look at the amazing technologies and advances in science and the products around us. I see God’s wisdom in entrustig several of these peole with the resources and am saddened when some feel compelled to try to take resources away from good steward and give those resources to less able stewards.
