Today's Saint

St. Joan of Arc - Patroness of France. Despite what the history books say, she was a martyr, refusing to denounce her apparitions as Heavenly - fearfully accepting death by burning at the stake - It is said that her heart didn’t burn and was thrown into the River Seine. Today is a big holiday in France. While I’ve never been to Rheims or Douay, I’ve been to Paris. Outside the Louvre museum - in a square surrounded by busy traffic - there looms high above a shining, gold statue of St. Joan upon a horse. This religious image is an awesome sight in a modern city.

Today is also the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I am dismayed that I could not get two pics into my signature. In the process, my previews show St. Joan only - but final signature shows no pics. (Maybe the Sacred Heart is sending a message.) If St. Joan appears, then the Sacred Heart of Jesus image will appear after today through to June.

(Anyone have suggestions on using two icons in signatures?)

I gave great love for St. Joan …she stuck to her guns and what she knew was true despite being faced with the stake. It must have been tremendously hard humanly to be faced with all, including The Church, telling her she was deceived and all the way to the stake. Thank you for letting me know that today is her feast day along with the Sacred Heart. I will make a note of today in my calendar. I have never been to France, although I did have the opportunity, but have French ancestry in my background on my Dad’s side…hence the name “Barbara”…Barb

I could NEVER remember whether her feast was the 30th or 31st. But long before holidays were moved to Mondays, I used “Memorial Day” (May 30) as my reminder that it was the same day as St. Joan’s feast day.

(I sort of wondered about your name / French ancestry…“Therese” - would be pronounced in the French manner. “TherAse” - right?

I could NEVER remember whether her feast was the 30th or 31st. But long before holidays were moved to Mondays, I used “Memorial Day” (May 30) as my reminder that it was the same day as St. Joan’s feast day.

Hi Conservative…I have made in my Calendar May 30th as my recurring yearly Feastday for St. Joan…and if I stumble across other infomation I can alter the date without problems…until then I am sure St. Joan will understand.

My French I am afraid is now as woeful as my Latin always was from the start. “Therese” of course is written with an acute accent over the first 'e; and a grave accent over the second ‘e’ and hence I think it would probably be pronounced literally “Teraise” or perhaps even “T’raise”…although that is from a lousy French scholar!!!
My Dad used to kid me that I was named “Barbara” after Barbara Stanwyck, the actress, whom I did not like at all for some reason. Truth is that I was named Barbara after St. Barbara patron of seafarers (also firemen and explosions!!!) and in French ships even today there is an image or statue of St. Barbara often in or near the boilerroom of French ships I understand. Sometimes she used to be many years ago somtimes on the bow of ships I have also been told. On Dad’s side we come from a seafaring family and Dad ran away to sea at 12yrs, later joining the navy at a more respectable age during the war. Hence my Dad’s great devotion to St. Barabra - now ‘kicked off the calendar’ her feastday was on December the 5th. and my birthday on January the 5th. We crossed the channel from France many years long ago and settled in England and Wales, later two brothers migrating to Australia…although I suspect that they were jailbirds and convicts sent to Australia
On Mum’s side I have Chinese ancestry. “East is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet”…which may account for my peculiarities!!!
My full name is Barbara Mary-Ann (an illustrious name indeed methinks) and I chose Therese for confirmation and back then solely on the fact she was the only saint (holy picture artworks) I had seen with a smile…knowledge of her life came later and with real pictures of her. I was astounded back then (around 13years or so perhaps later) to find that she was a REAL person before becoming a saint…all I had ever seen of saints were artists impressions in what we called “holy pictures” then. Back then I was even highly overcome to realize nuns were REAL people before becoming nuns!!! I was also astounded to discover that Carmel had not indeed died out in the middle ages. I had much to learn huh?

Anyone remember “Joan of Arcadia”? That show was pretty OK.

If “Therese” had an accent aigu on the first e and grave on the second, I would think it would be pronounced “Tay-REZ.” But this is coming from a person who’s barely had two years of French.
