…was absolutely AWESOME!!!

The Maronites were in charge, and speaking as one who spent the last eight years of his professional life marinating (pun intended) in Middle Eastern culture, I felt right at home.

Absolutely incredible!!!

About a year ago, I got a copy of the Consecration and Enthronement of Robert Shaheen as the Eparch of the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon and a video of the Patriarch’s visit to St. Anthony’s parish in the Carolinas.

I have to say that I love the Maronite Rite, and will be recording this Novendiales Mass tonight.

I find myself watching my Maronite Rite tapes over and over and over again. Even when there are gaffes, they are well done!

I am definately looking forward to this… only 30 minutes left!

Once I get a regular job and have Sundays free, I’m going to go down to St. Elias in B’ham from time to time, get my Maronite fix.

😃

I was always somewhat intrigued by the Maronites, I used to live in Brookline where there used to be a Maronite church. The church subsequently closed and moved and I don’t think I know any Maronites currently, so I don’t know when I will be able to be in attendance at a Maronite liturgy.

I suppose if I live long enough I will be some day, although hopefully not real soon, as it will probably mean that someone had died.

I watched it and I felt as though I were back in the Temple in Jerusalem… The commentator said that the Mass was being done in ancient Arameic…So very beautiful! I love the Eastern Liturgy…dare I say it has a richness that I just could not describe… I was mesmerized!

Unfortunately, the Vatican commentator didn’t seem to have a clue, or know when to quiet down.

The Institution Narrative was in Aramaic, the remainder was in Syriac, save the readings and some of the Intercessions. Readings and Homily were in Italian (the homily, delivered by Cardinal Sfier, was flawless and wonderful!), and the intercessions were in several languages.

I was most dissapointed when the commentator kept speaking over the sublime music that was being offered. I realize she was mainly working for radio - but it was just sad that she couldn’t stop talking during the music. Sigh Oh well, can’t win them all.

I am so glad that I recorded this. It’s on the same tape with my recording of JP2’s funeral, and it will - frankly - probably get watched far more often than JP2’s funeral.

It was simply heavenly.

Thanks to the tipster who informed me that this was going to be on.

I was disappointed too that she didn’t know when to be quiet… Then again, if she had… I wouldn’t have learned so much.
Again, it was just beautiful to hear the Aramaic…
BTW, the “Tipster” who told me was the Holy Spirit…😉
I was basically weeping through the whole thing as were some of the clergy…I saw one of the Bishops visibly crying… Who was that? He was to the left of the screen… before the consecration…white beard…? I wish I had the presence of mind to record it… Do you think that it might be avaialbe?

I listened to it last night and found myself participating in it no differently then Mass at a local parish. Even though I did not know the language, I understood the language. It was so clear to me. I just wished the commentators would be quiet.

A far superior commentary is avaliable on the VHS copy of “The Ordination and Enthronement of Robert J. Shaheen”. Patriarch Sfier consecrated Shaheen to the episcopate about four or five years ago in St. Louis at the Latin Rite basilica there. A Maronite Rite priest and commentator provided commentary that was actually valuable.

Another excellent resource is to obtain a copy of the Maronite Liturgy from the Eparchy of St. Maron out of NYC. I have a copy of the early parts of the year, and was able to follow with ease. It is such a wonderful liturgy!

I did record it, so I will go back and look at it later on and try to let you know. I belive it was one of the Patriarch’s assisting bishops. Was he the one wearing the gold and red vestments?

As to the avalibility, that will be up to CTV (Central Television Vaticano). EWTN made it clear not to expect to get copies of the Papal Funeral from them, so I would imagine that the same goes for the Novendiales.

Hi Fr. Rob,
I believe he had on a mitre and was vested in the white and gold w/ red in background…many were vested the same…
I doubt if we will get this video either… so thank you so much for the info …I will look into it.
I came into the Church in 1963 so I really didn’t have the Latin Rite, so to speak… Some are called into the Church by the ceremony, etc…I just came… took my lessons from a very devout priest and basically have been learning and learning about the “richness” of the Catholic Church… Now the “East” is something I’m loving!
God Bless,
Annunciata:)

This was some sort of non-Catholic service, done in the name of “ecumenism”… or what?

No, that was a very Catholic Mass, said by the Maronites–Eastern Catholics.

please don’t do this…
Ummm… what does that mean? (I really wish the admins would remove those “anti-smileys” from the software, they only cause trouble.)

Is that the same thing as Orthodox, like Greek Orthodox?

As a regular attendee of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Divine Liturgy, I was blown away by the Maronites…

I don’t know how to express it other than to say I was extremely proud to see those wonderful people celebrating such a gorgeous liturgy at ground zero of Christendom. I had goose bumps more than once. I can still hear the voice of the triangle…

That was perhaps the most concrete proof I have ever seen that the Catholic Church is indeed the Universal Church. In his death, JPII has provided the most amazing catechesis for western Catholics to the eastern churches. Bravo.

No they are not the same thing as Orthodox. These are Eastern Catholics they are in full Communion with the Bishop of Rome. They have their own liturgical languages/canon law/Bishops but we share the same faith united by the successor of Peter

Sorry if that offended you…but, I found your remarks offensive.

This was a beautiful Catholic Mass of the Maronite Rite…your remarks just stung me… Look at what this poster has to say:

Here is New Advent’s explination of the Eastern Churches…it explains both the Orthodox Churches and the Eastern Catholics. I think the Eastern Catholic Part is at section “B”.

Rather than to be looking for something to be offended at, you could have offered the helpful explanation that Sanctus did.

Thank you Sanctus, this will help a lot. I’m sure most Catholics are completely unaware of these “eastern” churches, or exactly what the deal is with the “Orthodox”, etc. Now, this “New Advent” stuff is from 1913, right? Is it still current?
