I’ll be visiting Tokyo and Hokkaido early next year. Any suggestions for a TLM or reverent OF Mass? I don’t speak Japanese, but for two or three Masses I can do my best. Thanks for your help.

Well, it was a pretty uncharitable question.
You are assuming that most Masses in Japan are not reverent, are you not?

“Hokkaido” is a big place (32210 mi²/83424 km²). A more precise idea of your destination would be helpful 🙂

Nope, you are the one assuming. I am Japanese and my father is from Japan. I have a pretty good understanding of what Japan is like.

Also, I asked the same question when I visited Dallas. I don’t think anything terrible of Dallas or Japan.

God bless you in every way.

I’m so sorry you took my message to mean something it did not. Sincerely. It was not meant as such. These are the limitations of the internet. I asked a nearly identical question on the same thread months ago about Dallas and it received no such reaction.

I also don’t claim to “know all about Japan,” but rather a pretty good understanding of what Japan is like. Does not mean I would not appreciate Mass recommendations.

This has become a classic negative forum interaction, with assumptions and petty back-and-forth (me included). I am bowing out now with sincere wishes for your blessings.

@StValentineFriend,

If you ever get to visit Taipei, Taiwan, just tell me and I can give you a full detail of the English masses here.

GOD bless! 😊😊😊

Fr. Augustin Toshio Ikeda, was a Japanese priest that offered the TLM, but he passed away earlier this year (Fr. Z posted about it on his blog, he was friends with him). He was one of the few (maybe only?) priests to regularly offer a diocesean-approved TLM in Japan, but it looks like that based on @Cherubin7th’s link above they have someone else doing it now. The SSPX has a presence in Japan as they do in most countries, but if you’re not comfortable going there then that looks like it’s your only option for TLM.

From what I’ve read recently (within the last year or two) you may have few options for a reverent mass outside of the TLM as many of the Japanese clergy and liturgists trend towards the more liberal end of the spectrum and many traditional practices have been removed from the liturgy (kneeling, for example). These are three suggestions that I found from a Japanese Catholic who did an AMA on Reddit:

This is very kind. I appreciate your neighborly response. Thank you.
