I think Belgarion is doing a great job expresing himself. Its not easy when you ask for advice to a nonspecific group of people - you get all kinds. You just have to sift through. Some will make assumptions, as he has found, and some have a style of advice that just won’t resonate.
Because then he would be wasting the money his parents spent on his homeschooling program. Graduating with a diploma from Seton looks way better on a sholarship app than getting your GED. GED is about public school knowledge, not college prep private school knowledge. That would be like going to a private school for a few years, then giving up and going to a public school and graduating from there. The college would wonder why and think that you cou;dn;t handle the work load. He isn’t in an abusive situation, just a difficult one.
I think while the Seton diploma might be better than the GED, either may well get him into the college he wants. Also someone said here that its a negative that he is graduating so “old” at 19, but I say thats easily explainable - he was helping his family - his family needed him.

So while a Seton diploma may be more ideal, he should not rule out the GED as an option when deciding what is best in his situation. He can get free advice from a college admissions person for what is best academically. Realize also that Seton has a vested interest in persuading that its extemely better to get their diploma over a GED since it is a certain detriment to their stats to have fewer graduates. He have to do whats best for him in his situation, not Seton’s stats.

Migirl, while the situation may not seem abusive, according to the true definition of verbal and emiotional abuse, its all relative. What is abusive to one may not be so to another. His experience of the situation is valid. If further help understanding his situation shows him there is some emotional or verbal abuse, that doesn’t mean he must run, but he can also cope with it appropriately. There are appropriate and helpful ways to respond to abusive words or situations.

Belgario, you are learning such mature life lessons, combining schoolingwith family responsibilities. These are such rare things to learn, and it puts you far ahead of the majoprity of your peers who juggle only me myself, and my responsibilities. It is not easy to answer in obedience to imperfect parents when you are an emerging adult with real concerns that are being invalidated. Dealing well with this is making you so mature.

I wonder also when you say your Dad was sequestered on the phone about stocks. Its a big worry these days. Its a fearful thing to be faced with losing all. Its hard to really know that when you are young and have not been faced with the fear of losing all you have ever worked for, and not having the youth that helped you earn it. So many in our country rely on what they have been able to build and amass instead of on the Lord and what a trial it will be for the vast majority of us when and if it all falls apart.
