What do you think of this quote by Aristotle?

“Tolerance and empathy are the signs of a dying state”

For me I see the current predicament of the Western World under the mercyless onslaught of political correctness. Just looking for other opinions.

I would agree with that; particularily if the “tolerance” was qualified with “unchecked”; or “rampant”.

Most of us agree that some tolerance is a good thing - yet we can all see the negative effects of universal tolerance.

I think tolerance is good so long as it is not taken to mean laxity. Who wants to be at enmity with his neighbour?

Tolerance is a buzz-word here in Ireland. And here is what the Irish version of tolerance means: hatred of Catholics and Catholicism. This tolerance covers many other topics but this primary meaning is it’s most distinguishing characteristic.
Some of us are fighting this tolerance.

Tolerance in our time and culture means we should tolerate evil. Jesus never said we are to tolerate evil, though! The only thing we may tolerate is good. For example, if you have a Benedictine spirituality, but that’s not my cup of tea, I must tolerate it. If I have a Franciscan spirituality, but that’s not your cup of tea, you must tolerate it. But we must never, ever tolerate evil.

There is a line between tolerance and stupidity, and I believe the Holy Spirit gives us discernment to determine where that line is drawn.

There is nothing correct about political ‘correctness.’ It’s just another soldier in the stalinist war on words and their meaning.

Where exactly does he say that? You see, I just searched through my electronic edition of the complete works of Aristotle for words “tolerance” and then for “empathy” and I found no quote that would even remotely resemble the one above.

But here’s the thing…Aren’t you confusing “political correctness” with “tolerance”?
The two things are not the same.

Being politically correct has been with us since there has been politics. It just wasn’t called that. If you wanted to remain at court, you publically thought and spoke in ways that would please the king. Those looking for political favors, would engraciate themselves by agreeing with those in power.
The Media too has ever been arbitors of what is politically correct, supporting the causes of the owners and mercilessly attacking their opponents.

Those in power determine what is PC and what is not. They also determine what is to be tolerated and what is not. Such tolerance almost always has to do with politically expediency and little to do with real Christian Tolerance. It has more to do with promoting one view and silencing the opposing view than seeking true understanding and maximum personal freedom in a society.

Well said, Kenshin!
Btw, there is a new artists thread on the Popular Media forum. Thought you’d like to check it out as I see by your link that you too are an artist.

Thankyou for the responses. I got this quote second hand and am not quite sure where to find it in Aristotles writings. Sorry for any confussion. Frankly I am not intolerant, my best friends are both Muslim immigrants. I was not referring to tolerance in the true meaning of the word (respect0 just to the modern sense of political and in some cases the white guilt we have shoved down our throats on a regular basis.
