toll houses?

Some Orthodox believe that after death, the soul goes through “toll houses”, where demons try to take the soul to hell on account of its sins, if they were not repented of…

I was wondering, is it consistent with the Catholic teachings to say that after death, the soul might encounter demons and that they take the unrepentant soul to hell? I don’t mean literal “toll houses”, but is the whole concept behind it legitimate? The reason I’m asking is because there are several early Church Fathers who mentioned something like this (though they did not explain it in detail)

God bless

That’s interesting - I had never heard of that.

However, it is not consistent with Catholic teaching. The Church says that our fate is determined at the moment of our death. If we die in a state of Grace (ie, not in mortal sin) then we go to heaven (but possibly via purgatory if there are venial sins to atone for). If we are not in a state of Grace then we go straight to hell. Thus, demons cannot influence our fate.

Mary, - lol! 😃

Do you think that it could be that demons try to attack the soul after death though? especially if it is going to hell… ? I think if a soul is saved, demons can’t change its fate and it will go to heaven - but can they still try to attack anyways? I’m just trying to link all this to the early Church Fathers…

J.M.J.
Well, I’m not sure if it helps, but I have often heard of saints or people who have died that have been on the brink of being sentenced to Hell forever, when miraculously the Virgin Mary or someone else grants for them a second chance. It seems to me like at each of our particular judgements there could possibly be demons who are trying to gain our souls (Satan is called “the accuser of our brothers”), as well as saints pleading on our behalf. This could be something very different from what you are talking about, but perhaps not?

That said, I think that ultimately private revelations must be submitted to the Church. That is how we are able to distinguish between the true and false apparitions of Our Lady. The Church has to guide us through these things - there are just so many factors that have to be considered.

I have to go! god bless,

Sorry! I think I confused your two threads a little bit in my answer. I was also thinking about your comments on the other thread about the private revelations and miracles of the Orthodox saints. I’m not sure what to think about those either; I’m unwilling to say that they were works of the devil, but I also know that you need to stay with the Church, and that finally She is where the Holy Spirit and His miracles’ true home are (St. Cyril, one of my favorite Eastern Fathers, wrote that: “Where the Church is, there also is the Holy Spirit.”).

It is interesting though. I think it’s possible that these Eastern saints were misled about the Church, and that God was able to work around their ignorance, but that’s just a thought; I really don’t know.

God bless (again!)

The Orthodox like their incense, long beards, and chocolate chip cookies! 😃 After looking at the chunky priests we have at our parish, I think the Catholic priests like 'em, too!
