I find Tom Hanks’s opinion to be unAmerican in the sense that it’s the American Way of life to have freedom of speech and support freedom of ideas and laws and positions without fear of government reprisal.
I wonder if he objected to anyone calling him unAmerican if he had opposed the war in Iraq.
I agree completely that it’s a mistake to equate love of country with love of a particular government’s policies. That was true yesterday and it will be true tomorrow. But what does that have to do with Tom Hanks?
Tomarin, the subject of the thread has shifted a bit: a previous poster suggested Hanks would not have been pleased to be called unamerican over his oppositon to the Iraq war.
Essentially, it seems that Hanks [and many others] believes ‘dissent is patriotic’ only when they do it.
If it’s the Mormons or Rush Limbaugh, its ‘unamerican’.
