They can coexist, at least for Western church. The fasting part is the only iffy thing in my mind - I don’t generally eat candy or cake on fast days.

Not sure how it works for Eastern Catholics.

First Fridays are a devotional people can choose to partake in.

If you choose to fast, and St. Nicholas still leaves you some candy or cake in your shoes, I’m sure you could take it as a sign from God to mix it in with your collation 🍬 😉 And of course, none of this stops kids from receiving and enjoying these things.

Reading up on the Eastern traditions, it seems since it falls within a fast in most places, they seem to both celebrate and observe (at least a modified) fast.

In any event, it’s all optional. But the more I read on St. Nicholas, the more fitting a day it seems.

Can some one catch me up real quick on what is supposed to have happened ? What on Earth is a pachamana ?

A half-naked folk earth goddess of the Amazon.
Pope Francis had some of them at a prayer service in Rome for the Amazon Synod and some clergy bowed to them, which many took as idolatry.
A prayer to Pachamama was also published in some Synod publication.
Then the Pachamamas were left in a Catholic church, where some zealous young Catholic men stole them and threw them in the Tiber.
Many people consider the Pachamamas’ presence to be an abomination.

I would be more inclined to suggest making reparation for all forms of idolatry rather than being specific to what is perceived happened with the synod figures. The New Testament regards idolatry in our times to be greed and selfishness which are what are causing so much exploitation of people and the earth. Don’t be like the Pharisees who could never see their own sins and were hell bent on destroying Jesus because He threatened their authority and their comfortable lives.

I will be making reparation for mankind’s sins in general, like I do every First Friday.
I think the Pachamamas were an error of taste and judgment.
I leave it to God and individual consciences to determine sins of others.
I wasn’t there, and wouldn’t have bowed to those things if I was.

One additional form of ‘fasting’ that was suggested to me by my priest was to fast from the internet. No blog reading, no web surfing, checking email only once or twice (morning and night) that day if it is necessargy (job perhaps), no CAF, no facebook or twitter etc etc.

Penance - something that is truly a sacrfice for us. Obviously extremes are to be avoided, but it shouldn’t be a walk in the park either.

So was it known that they were pachamamas , or were they thought in error to be representations of Mary ?

That’s another can of worms. Some clergy and others compared them to Mary, although I believe the Vatican finally came out and said they weren’t Mary.

Mary isn’t an earth/fertility goddess (we’ve already been over this with Our Lady of Guadalupe).
And Mary would not be represented, especially in Rome, in the nearly nude.

Those things aren’t Mary. They’re Pachamamas.

Oh that’s really confusing to me. I would understand including it if they were just allowing indigenous people to join them as an ecumenical event, but why are priests bowing down to these things ? Hope it’s just a misunderstanding

Yeah, a big misunderstanding. It blew up the Catholic Internet for a couple weeks. The more so when some Catholic radio station claimed the elderly visionary of Akita was revealing new messages telling us all to make reparation. There’s been about 10 separate calls for reparation since.

are we all sinning then by being part of/obedient the church, if the pope and the priests have sinned? I am really worried now

That’s a very good idea.
(he was just being Hippie Pope Francis as usual)
I’ve never heard that said before. Interesting.
