Ascension is a Holy Day of Obligation in some diocese in USA, so check with your own diocese to see if you need to go to Mass.

Not in all Dioceses.

In my Diocese it is moved to Sunday.

You are correct, it is actually not a holy day of obligation in the vast majority of the U.S. Only the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, and Omaha still have it on Thursday. I suspect some of the holdouts will eventually move it to Sunday as well over the next decade or so.

Yes, I mean, Ascension Thursday is only a biblical feast of great antiquity in the liturgy; the original novena of the 9 days before Pentecost isn’t that important…etc etc.

If the secular world didn’t still keep Christmas on 25 Dec, I am sure there would be a call from some to move it to Sunday too.

In other words, tomorrow is a holy day if you live in one of the following states:
  • Maine
  • Vermont
  • New Hampshire
  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island
  • Connecticut
  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Nebraska
God Bless

I don’t think so. This has been the way it’s been for a while now. I don’t expect anyone to change.

Thank you Little Lady and tseleehw for the correction. I have amended my post.

I do not spend much time out of those provinces you mentioned, and have received 3 reminders from priests about the Holy Day of Obligation this week, so it was on my mind.

In the United States, there are ten states that have kept the Ascension on the Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter (In such regions of the United States, the Ascension is always observed as a Holy Day of Obligation): Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Everyone else in the United States (outside of the ten states, listed above) have transferred the Ascension to the Seventh Sunday of Easter (Hence, in these regions of the United States, the Ascension carries the Sunday obligation to attend Mass, and they do not have to attend Mass on the previous Thursday/the preceding Wednesday evening).

Someone learned from my post from about a week and a half ago, lol.

This is a reminder to the Roman Catholics of the United States who follow the Ordinary Form about next week’s Mass obligations. This reminder is for you, if you are in the United States, AND if you are in one of the following ten states (Everywhere else, in the United States (i.e., outside of the ten states, listed below), the Ascension has been transferred to the Seventh Sunday of Easter (Sunday, May 13), and in such regions of the United States, the faithful are not obligated to attend Mass o…
