Does anyone here speak tongues in prayer (not necessarily proclamation)? I have a few questions to ask privately.

Thank you.

Peace,

I don’t speak in tongues. I have heard people pray and it sounded as if they were praying in tongues. However, I only sensed that it was legitimate one time. As far as I know if there is no interpretation possible at the time then it is not a legitimate case of speaking or praying in tongues. I could be wrong, but remember hearing this from a priest years ago.

Actually, I believe praying in tongues privately does not need interpretation.

Prayer in tongues does not “need” interpretation.

If it is a “word” for the group, then the Holy Spirit either moves someone to interpret or to call out asking for interpretation.

Hope this helps.

I agree and that was the intent of my post. I think in reality there is little actual praying in tongues. And as far as a group setting, I “heard” what sounded like people praying in tongues but there was only one time that there was an interpretation that sounded true.

I am not sure how to explain this, but in most cases when I “heard” prayer in tongues my instinct told me it was just babbling. Only one time did I have a reaction deep in my soul that said: “This is legitimate.” It made my spine shiver and the hair on my neck stand up. Within seconds another person made a single sentence statement interpreting what was said and it “felt” true.

So my own experience tells me that not all events in which someone is supposedly speaking or praying in tongues are legitimate. Some of these events are more likely a psychological experience versus a spiritual occurrence. Just my impression.

The thing is that when a person is praying in tongues, it is . . . let’s say a soul to Spirit prayer. It is between that soul and God. Notice that I said soul and not person.

I can sure understand what you are saying and respect it for we each have to be very full of care with this. It is the Holy Spirit who guides each one of us if we let Him guide us. Our Guardian Angel protects us also.

I am glad you understand – as much as any one of us can uderstand God and the way He works.

May His Angels protect you always.

Yes, we do need to be careful. One thing that seems consistent in my experience is matters that are truly of the Spirit of God are almost like a paradox, they seem simple as far as the experience, but just try to explain it. It is like there are no words adequate enough to fully describe the event in question. Every attempt to explain just falls short, but in your soul it makes perfect sense. Does that make sense?

That is correct.

In the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, it is taught that there are two distinct, separate gifts which employ the use of tongues.

The first gift is the common Holy Spirit gift of Praying in Tongues. It is called “common” because it is meant for all people.

The second gift is the classical gift or ministry of “Tongues” aka “Speaking in Tongues” whereby a person gives God’s message to the community or group that is present. This gift requires spiritual maturity, discernment, prayer, and preparation. It requires a second person who has the classical gift or ministry of “Interpretation of Tongues.”

The difference between the two gifts is that prayer tongues is speaking to God. “Speaking in tongues” is God speaking to the people present as a community or group at an appropriate time on the agenda. Normally, there is independent discernment of what is presented as God’s message.

Oh, yes! It makes perfect sense! It is like a paradox. I do know that God and snow . . . well, not much in common. Have you ever tried to explain snow to someone who has never experienced it? I know someone who went to New England in the winter to visit and who wanted to take some snow to South America to share it with the family. freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused010.gif Hmmm . . . I felt strange, but I had to explain to her that it needs to be kept frozen! Snow will melt and become water. I am serious! freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing014.gif I am laughing as I type this! :rotfl:

I hope you laughed with my story! No disrespect meant.
