Just open your mouth and you’ll see tongues. LMAO.

Of course, I know what you are talking about it. Speaking in tongues is gift of the Holy Spirit. They allow us to speak other languages and such. Some people are gifted to speak tongues.

The native tounge I use is English, well American English that is.

However other tounges I hear are Spanish, French, German.

However I don’t have the gift of the holy spirit to understand them tounges.

Oh, I don’t think jibberish is a tounge or a known language.

I think I know where we are going here.

Thank you so far.👍 but Im talking about how people from charismatic churches think of as tongues. Like a language that is spiritual in nature and not known to be of this earth.

You know when people start speaking something no one has ever heard before:confused:

But the answers I have received so far ,about speaking different languages ,is actually giving me some perspective.👍

P.S. I should state Im not really sure I believe in spiritual tongues. We were having a discussion in bible study today and there are 2 people that come from pentacostal backgrounds and really believe they can speak in tongues.🤷

I think speaking in tongues only purpose is to strengthen one’s faith in God. Though it isn’t necessary to have since God’s grace is all we need to be saved.

Speaking under the Spirit: “One who speaks in a tongue does not speak to human beings, but to God”. (1Cor 14:2)

St Paul wrote, “Now I should like all of you to speak in tongues.” (1 Cor 14:5)

Controlling the tongue: St Paul says, “If I pray in a tongue my spirit is at prayer but my mind contributes nothing.” (1 Cor 14:14).

(Mark 16:17-18), (Acts 2:4), (Acts 10:44-46), (Acts 19: 1-7), (1 Cor 12 & 14).

:yup:

Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

BEEN there experienced it!

AFH,

I have had an experience early in my conversion, oddly enough it was while I was asleep… My wife walked into our room and said out of my mouth a clear yet unidentifiable chant prayer was coming, she sat there as it continued for a couple minutes, the kicker was when my prayer was finished, in clear english she said I stated something along the lines of " All Glory be Given to you" or “Glory to God”!
Wish I was alert to have experienced it awake!
This was before her conversion and I think largely helped her accept the reality of God!

I had a girlfriend that was Pentacostal and I told her Phyco babble is not a language.

The first letter to the Thessalonians
Paul never opts for rigid emotions. “Do not stifle the spirit.” (5:19)

me too, but now I pray normally. If it ever comes again, Thy Will be done; I don’t want to force it.

I had my first experience of people speaking tongues around me. People were saying a prayer over me and they started speaking this unusual way, and they tried to get me to do it, but i couldnt do it. They told me they were speaking in tongues, and i was just blown away. Several of them can do it, they have been blessed by the holy spirit with it.
The only tongues im capable of speaking is my broken french, italian, german and swedish! lol

I do believe that speaking in tongues still exist. I also do believe that it is seriously abused by some in today’s world just like it was in Corthin. In 1 Corthinians Paul gives very clear directions on when and how this is supposed to be used during worship. Unfortunately there are many who do not follow the clear guidelines outlined in the Bible. Another thing that seems to get ignored is the the Old Testaments references to speaking in tongues. Keeping in mind that the Old and New Testaments are interlinked. You can not separate one from the other. Therefore if your going to look at the New Testaments reference to tongues than you should also look to the Old Testament references. The reason this is important is because there is a passage where demons were allowed by God to enter into someone for the purpose of speaking in tongues.

Many today hear something they don’t understand and automatically assume it’s from God. They forgot that Satan can appear as an angel of light and that we are called to test the spirits for this reason.

Of all the passages that speak of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, tongues is listed only once. Therefore, tongues are actually a lesser gift and not one of the greater gifts like some would make it seem. Also, in the Acts speaking in tongues (foreign languages) was used for the purpose of evangelization.

Like I said I do believe that speaking in tongues is still with us today but there are some that claim to have the gift when they don’t.

Bless your heart, He loves to hear from you in those languages as well. :extrahappy:

Paul urges the believer to constantly use the Spirit’s prayer gift. "At every opportunity pray in the spirit, using prayers and petitions of every sort."Eph (6:18)

Pray for the gift of tongues–ask and you shall receive!!

It took me 4 years to finally receive the gift…out of stubborness and lack of faith. 😊 But, I have come to love the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I agree with you on a number of points…demons etc…

Tongues is a gift from god, therefore, it is something wonderful and not to be scorned or passed over. St Paul says “to seek all the gifts”, he didn’t exclude tongues or any other gift as being “lesser”. Some are more prized because of their benefit to the Church but none are to be denied. If a gift is from God we should want it, even if we don’t understand it fully. Everything from God is a benefit to us and to the Church.

Any Christian in good standing with the Lord would immediately discern any gift as coming form Satan because it would disturb our spirit so much. We would immediately know that it is not from God. Trust the Holy Spirit within you to show you the truth about any Charismatic activity.

WOW, I go away for a few hours and the thread got big:D

Thank you for all your answers.👍

Im not really sure what I believe about this. I am studying the book of Acts and it came up in bible study.

I agree with Sabda on how it is the very least of the gifts and some make it the highest of gifts and most likely abuse it.

I also agree that Paul gave very clear instructions about using the gift so I guess maybe I dont believe someone is speaking in tongues unless there is an intrepreter and I believe the bible says it has to be a male.

After all, tongues is a language–right? So that is why there has to be an intrepreter–right?

 UGGG–it was a difficult bible study today–my head was spinning at the end.:hypno:

There are two different gifts: praying in tongues and speaking in tongues. Praying in tongues does not require an interpreter bc it is the Holy Spirit praying through you to the Father - you don’t have to understand what you are saying for it to be effective. Speaking in tongues is the Holy Spirit speaking through you, to give a message to the Church and requires the gift of interpretation of tongues.
