Tongues?

I cor 12-14

Eph 4

11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ

Basically, all spiritual gifts will be avilable until verse 13 above is completed. Since, I have never meet anyone who fulfills that as christians, I tend to think that spiritual gifts will be with us until CHrist returns.

note: apostle, is redefined by many to mean simply “one sent out” a missionary.

I agree.The Scriptures say explicitly that Spiritual Gifts are for the churches edification.Scripture also states that if there is no interpretation,to Pray in the Spirit quietly to God.You can find the church teaching on Spiritual gifs in the CCC.#688,739,741,799,800,801 and 809.Dont get offended but we were the first “tongue talkers”.Id be careful and not belittle or make jokes about the Holy Spirit or His workings…May the peace of the Lord be with you.

What I’m referring to more is the speaking in tongues and it’s use in worship. My experience comes from knowing Holiness Pentecostals. From my experience they are not exactly known for following 1 Cor 14 among other passages. 🙂

Water,

You have not lost the gift. Once you have yielded to the gift of tongues it remains with you. It is permanent. You can pray in tongues whenever you wish.

Maybe, you have some obstacle - fear, self-consciousness, doubt 🤷 that is interfering with the use of the gift. Pray with others, that usually helps.

Now I’m totally confused, Can anyone tell me in simple terms what speaking in tongues is? 🤷

Acts 2.The outpouring of the Holy Spirit.People heard Peter preaching in their own language.There must have been pilgrims from all over the Roman empire because of Pentecost with many differant languages.Acts 10:46 Gentiles recieve the Holy Spirit.1Co.12,13 and chapter 14 Paul teaches about the Gifts of the Spirit.There are earthly tongues and Heavenly Tongues(unknown Tongues)that would sound foreign to us.A man knows not what he ought to Pray so the Spirit prays through us with voice that cannot be uttered(understood).Hope this helps.🙂

Some of the post here have really bothered me. It comes to me as these people may be Blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

Just because you haven’t experienced it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I have heard these posters call it jibberish and psycho. I would be in fear of God’s Wrath if I were them.

I am a convert from a pentacostal church. Although I was never blessed with the gift of “speaking in tongues”, I experienced many other people doing it.

My first visit (back in April) to the CAF, I ask this question and was answered by a priest with the following answer:

Speaking in Tongues is described in Corinthans. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit and does exist today. It is not as frequently used in the Catholic Church as it is in the pentacostal churches. Do not assume that what you have heard has been false. Some of our Saints experienced the “speaking in of tongues”. As long as the guidelines that St. Paul spoke of are followed, then the gift can be used. What happened in the book of Acts is different from what Paul speaks of in Corinthans. At Pentacost, the Holy Spirit enabled the persons hearing the Apostles to hear it in their own language. In Corinthans, the Holy Spirit causes people to speak a language that others cannot understand. The language is only understood by the host of heaven. The Holy Spirit will sometimes present an interpertur if the message is meant for human ears.

Since I have been on the CAF forum, I have actually met several Cradle Catholics who have experienced “speaking in tongues” on a regular basis.

Please don’t Blastpheme against the Holy Spirit. If you aren’t sure about something like this, then go “Ask an Apologist”.

I agreed with you that people should be careful of what they are saying; however, I don’t think they are truly blaspheming the Holy Spirit; if they were, they would be dead by now. 🙂

Thank You for that, Pam. It disturbs my spirit whenever someone mocks the Holy Spirit in any way! Just because someone doesn’t understand it, doesn’t mean they have the right to ridicule it!

I struggled with this gift for four years. I lacked understanding, amongst other things. One day I just surrendered to the Lord and I started praying & singing in tongues and I don’t ever want to stop. I always had a hard time with prayer ~ knowing what I wanted to say but not knowing how to say it. Tongues freed me in prayer. I knew tongues was genuine because the Holy Spirit revealed it to me through my husband during our Prayer Group. I was praying in the Spirit and tears were just streaming down my face as I had never experienced anything like this before. When I finished the Lord spoke to my mind and my husband started to pray aloud and was speaking everything the Lord had just revealed to my mind. I nearly hit the floor!!! It was the first time anything like that had ever happened to me. I haven’t stopped praying since! 👍
 
When I was a kid I had a made up language that I only used with myself. Does that count?

A good question, that I don’t have an answer for. My childhood was full of angels and demons and God and Satan and spirits of dead people. As a child, I believed that language was understood by unseen things around me that no one could see. Including me.

As an adult, I think I was a lonely child with an over active imagination.
