Tongues. How do you know they are real?

Do the tongues bear fruit? It may take time to find out.
But that is the best way to proceed, I think. Personally, I remember knowing after the baptism in the spirit that I would speak in tongues. Just not right then and there. It was later that night/morning at about 5 am. I knew it was welling up in me. Then I just went ahead and opened my mouth and gave voice to whatever came out. It sounded strange but it sure did feel right. I think you just have to trust that Jesus won’t let you down.

It definitely is not an intellectual thing. There’s nothing to figure out. That’s why the tongues can be experienced or referred to as “tongues of flame.” You simply yield.

Peace

Tongue is a private gift given to individuals. It should not be made a big deal; much less trying to make the church prescribing it.
Could I ask if you have any biblical basis for that, because that seems to contradict the biblical model. “What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.” 1 Cor 14:26.

Also at pentecost, tongues were in no way private. The bible talks about people having the gift of interpretation of tongues, which could not happen if tongues were private. And as a much weaker point, when people were seen to speak in tongues in Acts, it was in a small group, and nobody was told to shut up.

That all seems to indicate that the church should be seeing the gift of tongues used in the meeting.

Hi, I suppose you are Charismatic and I would not disagree with you.

When I said private, I mean not to flaunt it as if one who has this gift is better than those who do not have it. The gift should be exercised appropriately and with wisdom so that it will not attract discord in the congregation and community. For if that happen then what good it does to this gift? Even if you have this gift, it does not mean that you are anointed every time whereby you will exercise it at any given moment. You will exercise it only when the Spirit moves you. That’s mean in a situation that is conducive for it to be exercised. I would not expect someone to burst in tongue during a Catholic mass. So I hope you know what I mean.

In my earlier post however, I was mainly referring to praying in tongue. In that case, it can be use for private purpose and again it should not be flaunted and discretion is the order of the day especially whether it the right place/occasion or not.

I will not be drawn into discussing this in this thread and that’s why I am cautious about this subject.

God bless you.

Hi ALLFORHIM. I do not have the gift of tongues but it is mentioned in the Bible at Penetecost. What I do have is a story regarding it though.

A few years ago I was trying to help a homeless woman named Denise who was in her 50’s, dying from brain cancer and suffering from schizophrenia. She “lived” in the church parking lot. I had known her for eight years and as she degenerated physically she could no longer care for herself. She had open sores, smelled of urine and had flies plaguing her. I had asked her to allow me to take her to the hospital but she refused. As she grew sicker I began to call Adult Protective Services in an attempt to have her hospitalized despite her wishes because she could not mentally make an informed decision. They always refused to take her because they said that she had to agree to treatment.

One day the church office called me and said that Denise was worse than usual and could I come and find a way to help her. I hit my knees in despair and begged Jesus to send someone to be his “arms and legs…” ( You probably know the prayer. It is supposed to be “hands and feet…”) I then called Adult Protective Services and waited with my friend. The nurses came out after several hours and in the dark of night decided to hopitalize her. As the ambulance pulled away a charismatic prayer group had ended their prayer meeting at the church and a friend came over to me knowing nothing of what had just happened. He was crying and said that he felt compelled to tell me that during the prayer meeting one of the ladies started speaking in tongues and that the deacon from our church had come in and interpreted what she had said. What was reported to me by my friend was that the deacon had interpreted the following: “You are my arms and my legs…” It was my whole prayer with the exact same mistakes that I had made while praying it, with the exception of when I had asked Jesus to send someone the prayer had said, “You…”

It made me cry then and still has the power to make me cry now. I miss my friend. She taught me many lessons in the eight years I knew her. One of them is that without a doubt God hears our prayers. Another is that speaking in tongues has its purpose. And that purpose is for God to decide.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful testimony. God does work in mysterious ways!

Wow.Praise the Lord.I do believe God gives these gifts as needed and to whom ever He chooses.

You are correct, these are biblical examples of tongues, but there are varieties of tongues that are private. They are usually referred to by “praying” in tongues, as opposed to “speaking” in tongues, which are the public variety.

1Co 12:10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

1Co 14:4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

(1Co 14:5) Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

1Co 12:11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

The private tongues are the Spirit praying through the person, and are of no value in a public meeting.

Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

1Co 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.

When Paul says he “prays in tongues more than you all” he is talking about doing this privately, for the most part. I am not saying he never used them publicly, but clearly, he preferred the prophetic gift for meetings.

1Co 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

Well, as for “speaking in tongues” as far as being public it was supposed to have gone out in biblical times and said it would NOT be replaced. Perhaps when a person personally is in prayer you can be chanting some language but it also must make sense to you or else it is demonic. The Catholic Charismatic movement has bothered me for some time because it’s protestant introduced in the 60’s. The Church does not believe that anything can be given to us by protestants. Also, the Church is constantly in revival, there is no need for a revival in what charismatics see it as being. Traditional Roman Catholics also don’t believe in it at all as a movement and believe it’s a hoax which is where I’m leaning. I encourage anyone to do some research on it and read the Bible texts about it.

wildjmp,

I am not sure where you get your information. Approximately three of four years ago I attended Southern Ca. Renewal Communities, a very large Catholic Convention held every year over the Labor Day weekend and Cardinal Roger Mahoney from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles presided at the closing Mass. It would surprise the thousands of Catholics that were there as well as the many priests and religious.

Jane, you are so right! The gifts of the Spirit were not just meant for one generation of Christians. It must go on. There’s too much spite and hostility surrounding those who have found the Holy Spirit and choose to be open to and yield to the gifts of the Spirit. The real tragedy is the indifference Catholics have toward their Faith. I know people who have given up on the Sacraments altogether and being hungry to know Jesus.
Maranatha! Maranatha! We are always in need of renewal. Good for Cardinal Mahoney.

I’m not sure I agree. Definitely there are times when tongues should be spoken in public, and times when it should be spoken in private (the second is evidenced in 1Cor 14:14, as you said)

In 1 Cor 14:18 he says speak not pray, though he is talking about private time with God, so at least your definitions of speak and pray are not strictly adhered to. But also, the entire thing is explained well by the notion that we build ourselves up by praying in tongues (wherever this is), and if this is then interpreted, we build others up too (and I might add, it is fruitful to our own minds). That explains why praying in tongues in church without an interpreter is pretty much useless. It also seems to make sense (hopefully not just because it’s what I’ve been brought up with).

Also, ‘groanings to deep for words’? I’m not a scholar, so say if I’m wrong, but that sounds very different to ‘another tongue’ - which means another language doesn’t it?

So yeh, although there isn’t a lot of evidence against what you said, the idea that there are two ‘varieties’ of tongues doesn’t ring true to me.
Well, as for “speaking in tongues” as far as being public it was supposed to have gone out in biblical times and said it would NOT be replaced.
What leads you to believe that?

Can you please define “biblical times”? What “time” is that?

Also, can you please show where this was “supposed” to have happened?

If this gift of the HS to build up the church ceased, does that mean all the other spiritual gifts did too, and if not, why not?
Code:

the HS is not “Protestant”.
Code:
The Church does not believe that anything can be given to us by protestants.
This is blatantly a contradiction of the Catechism.

However, I will agree that the gifts of the HS, including that of tongues, have been alive and well in the Catholic church long before the modern day Charismatic movement.
Code:
Also, the Church is constantly in revival, there is no need for a revival in what charismatics see it as being.
Can you please substantiate your assertion of what type of revival the Church needs? Can you support this with any Scripture, or Church teaching?

Also, can you explain why, if there is no need for it, why the Popes support it?
Traditional Roman Catholics also don’t believe in it at all as a movement and believe it’s a hoax which is where I’m leaning.
Clearly.
I encourage anyone to do some research on it and read the Bible texts about it.
Good idea! You start. Bring some scripture to support statements you have made here. I think that is a great idea. 👍

I was excited to see this thread. I do not speak in tongues but wish I did. My first husband was Pentecostal thru and thru, and was a very shy and quiet man who never drew attention to himself. He prayed for the gift of praying in tongues,as did his Pastor and one morning when he was praying the HS came upon him and he started praying in tongues, what a beautiful thing it was. The Pastor came to our house when I called him and they both were crying and praying in tongues. It was awesome. He continued to pray in tongues until his death 12 years ago.And I do know that this is a real thing, and wonderful!

I have some pamplets here from the Davenport,Iowa Dioceses that endorses speaking in tongues and it is endorsed by Pope John 11. Also some pamplets from the Archdioces of Portland, Oregon, same endorsment.

Now i will say that I wish I had this gift. So those of you who do please pray that if it is Gods will that I can recieve this gift. Thank you all for a great thread.

I will certainly pray that this gift be released in you also Tweety. As you may be aware, all of the gifts are given to each one of us in baptism. The Spirit releases in us those that are useful to ourselves and especually to the Body where we are in service.

You may wish to seek out a Catholic Charismatic Prayer group in your area. These have steps that can help you to find the release of this gift in yourself.

Hi Tweety and everyone,

God bless you! Very cool that I came across this thread just as you were asking for the gift of tongues! Blessed be the Lord! I believe that He sent me here to help you tweety! You’ll never believe this but I saw your name in another place here at catholicanswers a few days ago and mentioned it to my mom. Her nickname is tweety! so when I saw your screen name, I was blessed.

So!

Tongues is really a gift of God and yes, you can yeild to it (become open to this wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit) which humans do not understand but edifies those who pray with it.

I have created a life in the Spirit seminar to help people be baptized in the Holy Spirit and pray in tongues. There are eight parts and they are all on youtube.

These are the last three parts and they deal with Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Tongues. If you would like to listen to the entire seminar, the other videos are on the right side.

Be blessed!

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone here believes that tongues are still used today and if so where in the bible do you find back up for it?

If you do not believe tongues still exist today same as above why not and where is there bible back up?

Thanks in advance:thumbsup:
hi. i know of an amish lady that attended a service that a mennonite evangelist, that i know was speaking at. she only spoke german. he preached in english. she heard the entire sermon in german… even though he only spoke in english. interesting. this may be what happened when it is said of pentacost, that each man heard the message of the apolstles in his own language. so yes i believe tongues are still relevant today. but not the way they are taught in many pentacostal cirlcles. there must be a language that can be interpreted. God bless you and yours. 🙂

actually Benidict, the bible speaks of at least three different kinds of tonuges. The first is the one that you are mentioning: the tongues used by the apostles on the day of pentecost. That was a language that other people could understand (the scripture says that the people heard the apostles speaking in their own languages).

the second form of tongues is what is called “praying” in tongues (as opposed to speaking in tongues). You will understand this distinction in Paul’s teaching on the gift from 1 Cor 12-14. He says, that those with the gift of tongues speak not to human beings but to God, and no one understands them because they are uttering mysteries in the Spirit. (1 Cor 14:2).

I am not sure if I need mention any other scriptures about this gift on tongues, because it may just be that people have already made up thier minds to not beleive in it. That is too bad!

Sadly Flame, there are people on this thread that have already made up their minds to disbelieve. However, do not let this disuade you. There are many people that read the threads who are open to learning and accepting all that God has.
