60 minutes aired a segment on Mt Athos earlier this year. Is this a repeat of that?

It was shown around Pascha. Surely it is the same program. It wouldn’t make sense they could/would have filmed a second time on the Holy Mountain. It was an exceptional thing they were allowed to film there.

It’s a very well done piece. Mt. Athos: A visit to the Holy Mountain archived, along with two “extras” Extra: Life on Mt. Athos and Extra: Don’t call it art!

To repeat myself 🙂 the same reporter Bob Simon of 60 Minutes did an important feature last year on His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with Web Extra: Cappadocia. His All Holiness spoke with courage in the segment.

They are Orthodox, and yes, they are amazing! That is to say, that Mt. Athos exists as it does in this modern world is truly amazing.

I have seen this segment before, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in Eastern Christianity (the monastic life, in particular).

Plus, if anyone is of the female persuasion, this may be one of the few chances they will get to tour Mount Athos. I think women are banned from entry.

It is a monastic community …

Well, yes, and I think the tradition is fine. But Mount Athos covers a lot of ground… something like 130 sq. miles. That’s a pretty big enclosure. :o

The sheer size of the grounds, as well as the number of monasteries (20 is it?) does stimulate a bit of curiosity. So having a television camera on hand to give outsiders a glimpse is a welcome opportunity. 🙂

And twelve sketes. There was a very interesting lecture about Mt Athos a few months ago at the PAOI here. I hadn’t realized it’s a self-governed monastic state within the sovereignty of the Hellenic Republic/Greece. Also, he said they did sometimes in the past allow women there in times of grave peril, I suppose that would be during some wars.

Also, Dominican DSPT here had a viewing of “Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer” documentary with Dr. Norris J. Chumley speaking about the project. He said were not permitted to film on the Holy Mountain, so that segment of the documentary is all still photography.

We’re really very fortunate that 60 Minutes was given this permission and did what is a very thoughtful piece.

That was… amazing. I don’t know how anyone could be in a Liturgy for 8 hours. I mean, it’s great for an hour. But… I have trouble praying from Scripture or the Rosary, for even an hour. I either fall asleep, my thoughts drift all over the place and I have to check myself, or I go nuts.

But God bless them that can… especially that one monk, who said that his prayers were not being stopped, even as he was being interviewed… now that’s a gift from God. I’ll bet some people didn’t know you could pray to God even when you are talking to someone else! 😃

Some are even praying as they sleep.
