Tonight, 12/25 on CBS, the show 60 Minutes will be about Mount Athos and the Vatican Library.
It’s only the most Holy Location in all of Greece since the early Church.what is mount anthos?
It was shown around Pascha. Surely it is the same program. It wouldn’t make sense they could/would have filmed a second time on the Holy Mountain. It was an exceptional thing they were allowed to film there.60 minutes aired a segment on Mt Athos earlier this year. Is this a repeat of that?
are these guys in unity with the pope or are these guys part of the orthodox church who broke away from the pope aka the orthodox churchTonight, 12/25 on CBS, the show 60 Minutes will be about Mount Athos and the Vatican Library.
They are Orthodox, and yes, they are amazing! That is to say, that Mt. Athos exists as it does in this modern world is truly amazing.are these guys in unity with the pope or are these guys part of the orthodox church who broke away from the pope aka the orthodox church
these guys are amazing btw.
Plus, if anyone is of the female persuasion, this may be one of the few chances they will get to tour Mount Athos. I think women are banned from entry. They are Orthodox, and yes, they are amazing! That is to say, that Mt. Athos exists as it does in this modern world is truly amazing.
I have seen this segment before, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in Eastern Christianity (the monastic life, in particular).
It is a monastic community …Plus, if anyone is of the female persuasion, this may be one of the few chances they will get to tour Mount Athos. I think women are banned from entry.
Well, yes, and I think the tradition is fine. But Mount Athos covers a lot of ground… something like 130 sq. miles. That’s a pretty big enclosure. It is a monastic community …
And twelve sketes. There was a very interesting lecture about Mt Athos a few months ago at the PAOI here. I hadn’t realized it’s a self-governed monastic state within the sovereignty of the Hellenic Republic/Greece. Also, he said they did sometimes in the past allow women there in times of grave peril, I suppose that would be during some wars. The sheer size of the grounds, as well as the number of monasteries (20 is it?) does stimulate a bit of curiosity. So having a television camera on hand to give outsiders a glimpse is a welcome opportunity.![]()
I hope one day they will reunite to Rome. Anything is possible with God.A
We’re really very fortunate that 60 Minutes was given this permission and did what is a very thoughtful piece.
Some are even praying as they sleep. But God bless them that can… especially that one monk, who said that his prayers were not being stopped, even as he was being interviewed… now that’s a gift from God. I’ll bet some people didn’t know you could pray to God even when you are talking to someone else!
