Pax Christi!

Our film tonight is The Brides of Dracula. 1960. The count even bites his own mother?!

Watch with me; should be good fun!

God bless!

I rather skip it and watch some thing more edifying.

Those movies border on the satanic!

I always like him because he is respectful. (I’m referring to Svengoolie/aka/Rich Koz, not Dracula). On a show a few weeks ago, they featured a disabled man whose facial features were exploited by Hollywood. The man’s disability was caused by getting gassed in WWI. Sven, as always, described the histories of each actor, but gave special emphasis on this man, as a human being. This does not detract from either the humor of Sven through out the movie, nor the movies themselves.

Ooh- this is a bad one! Bad writing, bad acting, bad directing.

But at least the Parisianne is…

not bad!!

God bless!

Christopher Lee was wise enough to skip this movie.

I think I will too.

Pax Christi!

And a lousy bat!

By the way, tomorrow MeTV will show lots of episodes of old TV shows which have Leonard Nimoy in the cast. Yesterday they aired an episode of Perry Mason in which Nimoy’s unsavory character did it.

Back to… bad makeup! Bad accents! Bad this! Bad that!

God bless!

Yeah, Sven seems like a real mensch.

Where, after being bitten by the vampire, Cushing takes a red hot poker, burns the bites, and applies holy water to the wounds, removing but the vampire’s cursed marks but also the burn?

Can you say AWESOME?

“Only God has no fear”

I actually liked Brides of Dracula.

Those old Hammer Films were a big part of keeping the “horror movie” going during the 1960 and 1970s. I would describe Hammer Films as “atmospheric,”, featuring beautiful women with a kind of sexual, voluptuous look, and extremely "pretty"men, along with the rather bad acting and garish sets. I can pick out a Hammer Film without seeing the credits.

But again, they kept the genre going. They were kind of like a kid’s fantasy–nothing sophisticated, just lots of atmosphere and the occasional thrill. They remind me of kids (around 5th grade or so) pretending to be vampires, victims, and vampire hunters in their back yard or at Grandma’s old farm house–trying to be scary, but under the surface, just having lots of fun.

And remember, back then, the bat looked cool to all the kids in the audience!

And I do think that Peter Cushing is worth seeing in ANY movie! He is a very good actor, and his understated, calm performance in this film was such a contrast to all the other actors who played stock characters with such verve! I think he brought “realism” to the movie–he didn’t overact, and he played the role with complete seriousness. And he was very handsome in those early days and remained handsome right through Star Wars! (Love those high cheekbones and thin face!)

And of course, as always, Svengoolie is marvelous.

Satanic–naw. These are just scary fun movies made for kiddies. If you actually sit down and watch the movie, you will see the cross constantly used as the foil for the vampires, and at the end, it plays The Main Role in the vampire’s defeat. In other words, this movie made it quite clear that Jesus Christ is IN CHARGE! That’s not a “Satanic movie.” In a Satanic movie, the devil wins, and Jesus is laughed at or ignored utterly.

I don’t like filling my mind with vampires, and other things that have to do with satan. It opens a door that I rather keep closed.

Oh my gosh!

Rich is an acquaintance of ours and our younger daughter is hoping to be Svengoolia someday. I can’t even believe I’m reading a thread on here about him, and about a Hammer horror film. How lovely!

We Hammer aficionados typically look at Brides as one of Hammer’s best, even without Mr. Lee. Personally, this, Horror of Dracula, The Vampire Lovers, and Vampire Circus are my very favorite Hammer vampire films.

Rich has been just wonderful as Son of Svengoolie. He’s just a sweetheart and a quick wit. If you ever get him talking about the Three Stooges, you’re in for a treat. I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s a mensch. 👍

In a real Satanic movie, there is no real, personal devil. Sin is non-existent except in a general way - the “sin” of poverty, the “sin” in inequality, etc. People don’t commit evil actions they make “wrong choices”. There is no virtue either. Instead, people make courageous decisions to stop following someone else’s dogma, and experience spirituality, which is defined as inherently good; and empower others to find their own spirituality, too. Jesus Christ would not be ignored, but applauded.
Now that’s Satanic!

Where can one go to watch this? Netflix, Amazon, iTunes?

Yes, I definitely agree with you that these types of movies are very dangerous, much more so than the “horror” movie with monsters and clearly-defined boundaries between good and evil. When even a child can “booo” the monster and “yay!” for the good guy, IMO, it’s an OK movie for most Christians (although I respect those who say that these movies are not good for them personally).

However, there are horror movies in which Satan is a character or presence, and he wins. An example would be Rosemary’s Baby (the old version). It’s my opinion that those who have some kind of satanic or occult incidents in their past should avoid movies like this, and even those of us who are not burdened by any association with Satanism or the occult should stay away from movies in which Our Lord is defeated by the devil.

Here’s my idea–we live close to Chicago. I would like to convince our skating club to do an ice show called, “Ice Goolie,” and feature all numbers about monsters, vampires, witches, zombies, ghoulies, and ghosts! I think it would be such a fun ice show for the kids and adult skaters, and great for the audience! AND…here’s the best part–I want Svengoolie to come as our Special Guest! It he skates, it would be awesome, but if he doesn’t, we’ll figure out a way to get him out onto the ice and wheel him around (maybe we could make an “ice heart/hot rod” to push him around in, and let some lovely lady witches do the pushing!

I think we would have a sell-out audience, and the line in the lobby for autographs and photos would stretch down the block!

What do you think?

Just saw this. Sorry! Back on after a while.

I think that’s a tremendous idea and wish I lived in Chicago! I think Rich would go for it! 👍

Really? Oh, cool!

I’ll talk to my skating club. I just did a good deed for them and so did my husband. So hopefully they’ll be inclined to listen to the idea.
