So it’s unhealthy to us, spiritually, to become too attached to worldy things. True happiness is found through Jesus. I firmly believe this.

But how attached is “too” attached?

I sometimes find myself getting a bit distraught when I try and answer this question. I’m a teenager, so naturally I like music, fashion, etc. But at times I feel guilty for simply really enjoying a band that isn’t a Christian band or wanting to buy new clothes. Along with feeling guilty, I feel ridiculous. There’s nothing wrong with liking wordly things…is there?

No, there’s nothing wrong. “Too attached” would be placing the things above God, your family, your studies, etc. If you would be devastated to be without your things, you’re too attached.

I’m not sure the distinction between “Godly” things and “worldly” things is good. God created the world to make us happy and to point us to Him. We see glimpses of the happiness of heaven and being with God in the joys of our life on earth. St. Paul tells us (sorry, I can’t quote chapter and verse) that whether we eat or drink or a few other things, to do it for the glory of God. If you keep your “things” in perspective as gifts of God, but not gods themselves, you’ll be just fine. Be thankful, enjoy, and remember the Giver of all.

No, all good things come from God, reflect Him, and must be used for His glory and for the salvation of souls. Even if He gives us things we think we don’t need - music, joy, chicken - we must remember that He knows best and He has not only our good but everyone’s good in mind. Hence, He might allow us to buy an album to council someone who is perplexed over attachment to creatures and things.

Betsy always comes up with good answers. 👍

If you keep this mindset, becoming too attached to anything won’t be problematic. I was going to add that “too” attached to anything is when such an attachment distracts us away from God, but I humbly defer to Betsy’s excellent response.:aok:

Someplace I saw what purported to be a message from an apparition. Not sure if it was even an approved one, but the message seems good in any case.

Hold all worldly things in an open hand. That way it won’t hurt as much when they are taken from you.
