I know that I’ve seen this covered before, but I couldn’t find the answer when I just looked. When my husband and I visit my parents, we are 45 minutes from the nearest Catholic Church. I’m somewhat inclined to go to my parent’s church, they are methodist, which means that we are hearing the same liturgy, and not take communion. We asked a retired priest in our parish (the priest is SUPER busy, and I hate bothering him) if we should get a dispensation, but he said he didn’t think so. He knows my folks come to church with us when they visit, and thinks it’s “nice”. It rings kind of false for me and hubby, but I’m thinking the 45 minute may also constitute “too far”, which makes everything else a moot point. Is there a formula for how far to go to mass?

I don’t think 45 minutes is too far, and while the Methodist church might have the same liturgy, they don’t have the Real Presence and their service does not fulfill your Sunday obligation. Sounds like your conscience is telling you that too.

I would make every effort to get to mass. 45 mins CAN be too far depending on your circumstances but only you know that. If you absolutely cannot attend Mass I would go with your parents, but not as a substitute, more of a family thing.

well, 45 min. is about 18-20 miles on our odometer on a good day… I don’t drive and I don’t know anyone , including my husband who would drive that far to take me to church.

However, if you are willing and able and have a reliable car the decision is up to you.

It takes us 30-45 minutes to drive to Mass (and that was after switching to a closer parish 😉 ). There is a parish closer than our current one, but we like all of the young families and babies at this parish, so we’re willing to drive an extra 15 minutes.

I think, since you already received sound counsel from a priest, you should trust him. The Real Presence is totally worth the 45 minutes to get there!!!

I’ve spent 45 minutes getting to sports games, ballet performances, family get-togethers…

I can drive that long for Mass.

Just last night DH & I were talking about if we had to walk to Mass how far would we walk to get to Mass. (we actually only live a 10 min walk from our parish so we walk to mass often already) We decided that and hour (maybe and hour and a half) was what we would walk to go to Sunday mass.
I know this isn’t an answer to your question, just thought it was interesting to think about. 😃

I think 45 min is not too far.

I commute over an hour to work every day. If that’s not too far, it’s not too far for God.

God bless
