Too Harsh a Penance?

I know I myself would have asked for a different penance simply because I don’t pray the rosary and never will.

So, the penance would not be valid for me.

although if you came in with no intention to do a penance then it might - I’m not positive about that). But not doing the assigned penance most definitely presents a problem for the next confession.
This is true but different from what was originally implied. Insincerity impacts validity of confession; not completing a penance for reasons not intended prior to the first confession only needs to be mentioned in the subsequent confession but doesn’t impact the first one’s validity.

I don’t think I implied what you are suggesting. If you include the first two sentences of my paragraph, which you omitted from your quote, it is clear that your sins are forgiven.

Hi Sandy. I believe there was a misunderstanding. I would get in touch with the priest who gave you that penance as soon as possible and straighten it out. Until then, just do a Rosary a day. I was given a daily rosary penance once, and it was a protracted one, during the Easter season, but it was not perpetual. Could be he wants you to do a daily rosary for the souls in purgatory, until All Souls Day or something like that. Ask him and find out. God Bless you.

It’s not the time. Some people just really don’t like saying the rosary. I love the idea of saying the rosary. But I really don’t enjoy it, and I dont feel like it helps me be more “anything.” I wish I liked it, but I don’t.

Could be to see another priest. If the confession is : “I have no prayer life” than developing one is in order. I never pray the rosary in groups because it goes like a machine gun litany. Start small- say an our father, a hail Mary, and just tlak to God. And sure, see another padre if need be.

I was not confessing anything I had not confessed previously.
Maybe it has to do with your inability to correct that flaw. Prayer can help. You should discuss with your priest your concerns regarding this penance.

Go to another priest and explain the situation. He’ll be able to help you.
I know we can’t change regular confessors without them permitting us to do so. The OP has to ask his priest permission to begin confessing to someone else.

and you give the blessed Mother a bouquet of roses for every one you complete. 💐 This is the reason for my saying the rosary every day for the past 15 years now, so I look forward to it. Most days I can say it in the morning without interruption, but 10 percent of the times I need to finish it later because of an interruption.

I don’t know since when. I would like to call @FrDavid96 @edward_george1 @bucfan to help clarify this for me too.
Personally I have been told so by priests every time I went to confession and I also read abou this online on official church sites. But I am in EO maybe there are different rules in CC.

There’s no obligation to HAVE a regular confessor, let alone a prohibition on changing who it is. Please cite your source if you have other information.

I don’t think that is the case in the U.S. Maybe it’s just where you live, Mary? Or maybe that is just the preference of your pastor. I have never heard of that before.

Well, I am happy that works for you Cajun, but it doesn’t for me.

I started doing the rosary wrongly and I still do. I visualise each mystery on each bead, so all five mysteries occur one after the other, then I begin afresh and do the same on the next five beads. I also try to hold it in mind that Our Lady is close and listening. Those things have happened in time though, I wouldn’t recommend trying them all if you’re new to the Rosary.

I like it a lot but I do find I have to stifle yawns for some reason! I ask to be excused of course.

First time I read the Rosary I got adversity against praying. My feet felt jittery and I was nervous and it felt like an effort. So realized it is a seriously powerful prayer so I did it again.
Then there is an Akathist to a local saint in Romania during which I started to feel dizzy and could not finish it. The saint herself has helped me and I wanted to read it in her honor but it was difficult. I plan of course to repeat it and do it again. To other saints I had no problems. My favorites are St. Peter and St. Paul. I never felt impeached while praying to them. I take this as a sign of the glory and power if the Apostles. People rarely just pray to them. Other saints are prefered. I don’t know why…

A bit off topic but I lost my mobile and couldn’t find it for three days. I’d looked in my car before and everywhere, couldn’t find it, it was a though it had just disappeared.

So late today I prayed to Saint Anthony, and then a little while later I asked my guardian angel to help me find it too as I thought he would definitely know where it was. So I was drawn to look in my car again and after a little while I found it sitting on top small carpet mat on the top edge in the passenger footwell! A very odd place for it to be but I had to brake hard a couple of days ago and it must’ve flown off my seat and landed in that strange place. I was very happy to find it! And I thanked St Anthony and my guardian angel both.

😊

I never once prayed to St. Anthony before this year, but asked for a parking spot twice and not 30 seconds after, found one (this is for street parking in my neighborhood where sometimes I’ve had to drive around an hour + for a spot to open)

Call the parish tomorrow and leave a message for the priest. Ask him to clarify the penance. You can ask for a different penance if you feel that 15 minutes of prayer each day is something you cannot accomplish. God does not demand the impossible.

I hear you there. I seem to start falling asleep which, if you know anything about the half-awake half-asleep state, makes for some interesting Hail Marys.
