Too much noise and talking in Church

culture. Hispanic families tend to spoil their kids, who run all over the place during Mass. It’s annoying.
Spanish mass is longer, more child filled. Don’t mind that at all. Love Spanish Mass.
It is the men gambling outside on the steps that bothers me.

I noticed this at the Christmas eve mass too, even though it usually isn’t a problem at my parish. I think the reason is that at a normal Sunday mass, everyone waits to show up until it’s about 2 minutes before mass starts. Everyone knows better than to do that on Christmas eve though. Since we got there about 25 minutes before mass started, and so did quite a lot of other people, it’s only natural to spend some of that time talking. I know too that I had out of town relatives with me, like my sister who is in grad school on the east coast, so even I did some visiting. I usually think of the time before mass as a time for silence and prayers. Christmas isn’t just any day of the year though.

I realize this is an old thread, but I became so upset during mass tonight that I had to write. All during church and even during EVERY prayer, the people behind me talked and or whispered. While I don’t approve of talking during mass, it is sometimes necessary. However, I was shocked at hearing whispering during prayers. I heard someone behind them ‘shush’ them but they continued. Then I ‘shushed’ them and they still continued. After receiving communion, I sat down to pray and focus on being one with Christ and the chattering was not even at a whisper then. I got up and moved and after, I told my priest and he said he’d remind everyone next week about being quiet and respectful.

I always come away with such a wonderful feeling after mass, but I was frustrated today as I could not concentrate on the homily, the prayers or the Eucharist. I had to pray on the way home to ask for help in overcoming my pettiness.

I disagree with the person who says that we should not correct strangers.
I’m the type that will say it like it is. If nothing is said, then it will continue.
There are times when I have had to say something to the music ministers, the ushers, people old enough to know better, etc., and I myself had such a horrible experience at a children’s Christmas Mass, that I stood up at the podium and asked everyone to Please!! Be!! Quiet!!
I feel that they are not asking me if they can talk, so I don’t have to tip toe around them either.
At the children’s Mass that I went to, the adults were the worst.
I don’t plan on going to any more children’s Masses.
Luckily, we have found a quieter Church where the Pastor will say it like it is.
If I sound frustrated, I am, and unfortunately, some Priests are just as bad.

I’m just glad they’re all there to pray with me. I need community.

I think we have a perfect right to shush the ones who jabber during Mass. Either that or give them a long look they notice. God’s house has become a din of cacophony.

True To Him

At my NO parish the Rosary is said from about 20 minutes to the beginning of Mass and so that usually keeps things relatively quiet. Most people get to Mass about 5-10 minutes before it starts anyway…

Hello, Is there anyone else out there that has a problem with all the extra heavy loud talking that goes on before Mass starts these days ? I attended a 5p.m. childrens christmas eve mass last week. It was at a roar in the church before the start of Mass. people isles apart talking to each other. People walking all around. It was the worst I’ve ever seen, It was like the noise in a food court at a mall. What can be done? Does anyone else have this problem? Why do you think people are behaving like this? Have they totally forgotten where they are? and who is there? What is happening at your parishes?
I think the biggest single reason for this behavior is that many parishes neglect the fellowship needs of their parishioners. Being social by nature, because there are either limited or no chances to socialize with our fellow faithful we end-up talking in church.

I have seen two things work. First, a group went to the pastor and said they would be responsible for unlocking/locking the adjacent parish hall a 1/2 hour before and after Mass. With that commitment the pastor told everyone from the ambo and the bulletin to use the parish hall and not the church as the place to engage in fellowship. It took awhile but it worked.

Even better is to have a program of coffee and goodies after Mass. Yes this often gets to be a lot of work for a small handful, it gets political, people whine and it takes a long time to get people to regularly attend, but the results are worth it. People have a means of fellowship which keeps the church quiet but it does something even more important – it allows Catholic Christians to get to know one another. Just make certain you get an iron-clad commitment from your pastor before you begin. If you start having to “postpone” coffee and goodies because other people are using your meeting space then it’s going to die for sure. Similarly, once it starts showing some promise, if the wrong people offer to “take over” don’t allow them to or again it will die in short order.

What doesn’t work is wringing one’s hands, getting angry and confronting either the talkers or the pastor.

I don’t know about manners. Fact is my parish consists of 80% over 70. and our brand new Filipino priest became so upset at the noise, he started going up to people in the pews and saying " Hey you know what? ****Shut up." We have been a much happier parish since then. He catullay called people at home and said “Hey you know what? Shut up.” Because hey you know what? if you listen, most of the discussions carried on by these adorable elderly consist of gossip and nothing else.
That’s very sad to hear. No one, particularly a priest should act in such a crude manner. With the inherent authority of a priest in a church setting, some kind words to be quiet would have been far more appropriate and likely efficacious for the long term.

Sadly, even if I was talking before or after Mass, if he said that to me I’d likely go after him through the bishop or I would just leave and neither serves Christ.

What is a “NO parish?” I don’t know of anything the Church offers that is called a “NO parish.”

Have to say…I agree. It seems Americans/Europeans are the only ones who value sitting still and not making a peep.

Other cultures seem to have a “let kids be kids” attitude that is easy to frown down upon.

For example, there was some disagreement between a wife and husband…the husband was Filipino and content to let the kids run around and babble. The woman was white American and thought it to be offensive.

I suppose that’s off topic. I like our church because people are jolly and talkative in the back, but the second you walk through those doors, complete silence.

I don’t mean to sound holier-than-thou, but I seek interior quiet. It’s is not necessary to have outer “quiet” to come before the Lord and pray and worship Him. What is necessary is to quiet our hearts and souls inwardly and then sit at His Feet and listen to His still, small Voice.

We should be able to enter into His Presence in the midst of the cacaphony that is everyday life on this earth. The outer circumstances shouldn’t affect this communion between us and the Lord.

For those of you who complain that “Holiday” Christians disturb your “quiet”–would you rather that these precious souls stay home and avoid an encounter with God just so that you can have peace and quiet? Wouldn’t it be better to rejoice that these prodigals have returned to their Father’s House for even a short time?

Whenever I see threads like these, I think of dear St. Maximilian Kolbe in Auschwitz. I doubt it was quiet in the concentration camp, yet he not only communed with the Lord, but led others into His Presence. I want to be like him.

I do appreciate your comments about an “interior quiet.” There is something wrong with those that get angry when people talk. They should learn how to offer it up and ultimately how to help to quell the noise.

What I don’t appreciate is your straw-man. No way would having to be quiet in church cause one to miss Mass – well, unless they were insulted like that priest mentioned above.

We can also look at it another way. Would you rather lose more good Catholics to non-Catholic Churches that show a greater level of respect then the Catholic Churches do? Then all you will have left is the Movie Theater Catholics.
I believe there is something wrong when people are asked in a polite way to keep the noise down and still have the edacity to continue being rude, showing a total disregard toward those around them, unless we have more non-Catholics showing up for Mass then I realized.
We must remember that we are in a Catholic Church, not a Movie Theater.
I believe what is really wrong, is that we have lost respect for the Sacred. We should be going to Mass for God; not to come and talk about the latest sales at the mall, etc.
It is much easier to have inner peace in a quiet setting, then a loud one, where we a forced to listen to those around us who are rude and just simply don’t care.
This is the very reason so many have left the Church.
I echo what I once heard a Priest say, “If you are going to act that way, why come to Mass? Why not just go to the Movie Theater?”

If people are leaving the Catholic faith because others are talking in Church, then they have a serious problem that requires further explanation. Actually I rather doubt people are leaving the faith due to others talking during Mass. It sounds like another straw man to me.

👍 and for all those shushers out there :banghead: you are louder than the talkers! in fact if someone ever shushed me, i’d talk even more. putting a finger over one’s lips without making a noise is a much nicer way of getting your point across. a shush sound is a mean nasty sound, probably because it is done when one is angry.🤷

if they leave the Church for this reason, than they really don’t know who’ve they have left. pretty sad reason to leave the Church if you ask me.

  1. This should be the very thing that should cause us to stop and take notice of our behavior. Remember elementary school? Keep your hands and feet to yourself? Settle down? Even teachers have said that many parents who won’t control their children, send them to school and expect the school to do it. Now that is what is sad.
  2. As for the second responder; that is what proves my point. The adults are worse then the children. Unless you are prepared to get into a fist fight at Church, you better head into the cry room right away, because there are people out there like myself that will not tolerate it, period. I’ve never put a finger in people’s faces.
When I was young, my parents taught me respect. Today it is called abuse. Every now and then if we acted up, a nun would pull us by the ear into another room and scold us for our bad behavior, excessive noise, etc. We even got spanked, which today is a crime. I never developed a psychological disorder as a result, and turned out quite normal.
It is obvious that I am speaking to deaf ears on this point, and so the arguing is pointless. But let me give you a modern day parable, if this will help:

“It is as if someone was walking down the street and saw someone and said,” How would you like to play a Priest today, and he said ok.” Then they went over to a crowd of people and said, “How would you like to come over and see what it is like to be a Catholic?” And so they followed. And then they went over to a strip bar and asked some strippers, “Would you like to come along?” And so they followed. Now this is the state of many Catholic Churches today."

We went to Mass at a Church in our city. During Mass, they had a baptism. We were horrified that some of the adults were dressed provocatively. When this was brought up to the Priest there, he responded by saying, “We are to be accepting and loving of everyone.” I reminded him that he is a Priest, and that he has a duty to insure that children as well as adults are required to conform to Catholic teaching. It made me wonder what RCIA is teaching.

What are we to tell our Protestant friends who attend churches that are a lot quieter? Come to the Catholic Church so you can learn our bad habits and immoral ways? Come watch our children run up and down the isle ways shouting Tarzan yells while their parents look the other way? Isn’t this the very reason that Hell Fire and Brimstone fell on Sodom and Gomorrah? Would Jesus Christ have to pull out a whip in many of our Churches today and remind us that Church is to be a house of prayer?

This is the very reason why so many Catholics are leaving the Church. They are going to unapproved Tridentine Churches, Greek Orthodox Churches, Protestant Churches and Non-Denominational Churches; and the reason is because these other Churches are taking their worship a lot more seriously then we are. They simply won’t put up with bad behavior. And unless we stop and realize that bad behavior is offensive and unacceptable, the problem will only get worse. I am only saying what millions have not said, but are most definitely thinking.

One day you will get more serious about God and the Mass; and then you will know exactly where I am coming from.

If you wish to respond in a childish way, this will be all I will say on this subject. If you wish to continue a more adult dialogue, then I will respond.

Yes, I am quite familiar with all those problems. Except, for me it was the morning Sunday Mass, not a children’s liturgy. I solved them all by going to the Latin Mass. Ah, peace, reverence and quiet! 🙂
