EdWest is clearly making summary observations based on the content of thousands of postings; dip into any area and you’ll find far more matching cases than not. He’s on very solid ground.

I’ll point out what should also have been obvious, his first three words “in my view.”

I’ll go beyond that and say he’s accurately described the stance and methods of many dissenting posters. Outflanking is a great word for their tiresome tactics.

The more I hang around these forums, the more I find myself praying for the poor parish priests…what heroic work they take on, shepherding onward such poorly formed, opinionated, truculent Catholics. Everyone has an opinion and a gripe and an agenda.

Can it be said of us that we let a single day go by where we don’t pray ardently for our parish priest(s)?

Do we offer small sacrifices for them?

Do we help them spread true teaching…or do we chatter away pridefully in the cafeteria line?
Who has said, “hey whatever people do is ok”?

Who has said, “Nobody is perfect, so why try?”?

I get hit with these summaries VERY FREQUENTLY and I cannpt remember a single poster ever arguing that no rules apply or that because we can’t be perfect that we should not try to be good. I get that kind of thing flung back at me, but I have never said it nor implied it.

This kind of forum IS a cafeteria line. If you don’t like the food, don’t wait in the line…right?

And praying for people is awesome! Don’t stop!

I am amazed at having been coming to this website for a couple of months, over the number of threads dealing with sex and homosexuality, the later being far more prevalent. Sex preoccupy’s all of us at various times, I know there have been times in my life where I have been preoccupied and even obsessed with it. However there are so many more things to be obsessed with in life.

In my opinion it’s this constant talk of sex and sex in the media and television/movies that creates the problems we have in society. Sex should be out of the mainstream. Kids should be taught right and wrong, and that’s the end of it. It becomes a private matter after that. The more attention given sex in the public arena the more interest it creates.

Homosexuality is another thing all together. Everywhere you turn, there is some media blitz over gay marriage, gay adoption, equal rights for gays and such. The degeneration of society has created all of these issues, and most of the postings I see here are trying to search for what is right, trying to justify it, or making excuses for it. Homosexuality is WRONG. That simple. It’s against the laws of man, God, and nature (although I will say the man-made laws are changing when they shouldn’t be). Just because something can be done doesn’t mean it should be done nor does it justify it. The Catholic Church as do most religions aren’t going to recognize gay marriage no matter how many states vote for gay marriage. There may be some that cave under the pressure eventually but the majority aren’t.

Sorry if I’m rambling and venting, but we need to get off the topic, lets get more faith oriented and chat about that.
“get more faith oriented”…what does that mean to you? One of the things it means to some is resisting temptation, which comes to us through three channels:
  • the devil
  • the world
  • the flesh
Sins of the flesh are one third of that equation! Ignoring the topic won’t make it go away.

God bless you,
cecilia

Hi cecilia97,
You have summarised such resistance beautifully!
I pray for all who will not see this truth; that they will leave the jaded self and travel on this right road of resistance.
God Bless,

Sex dominates the world and therefore causes temptations, but there is so much more to life than sex. If people simply were to look and think about the other wonderful things in life these issues wouldn’t monopolize this website, or cause them so much grief. I know this because I spent far too much of my life worrying about sex…it’s merely one facet. There is so much more to life.

Oh and faith to me is three things:
  1. learning about Jesus and God
  2. Thanking him for the gifts that he has giving you.
  3. and building a better, closer relationship with him
Temptation is only “one facet of that” If we obsess over temptation then we don’t have the time to truly enjoy the gifts God has given us.

Happinss is a state of mind!

I have yet to see very many posts that describe what you say, most read like they are posted by homosexual men looking for a way to still be considered Catholic, or middle aged men that are looking for ways to feel better after masturbating to some type of porn. Perhaps they should be attending confession and working with their priests on these issues to REALLY overcome them.

The reality is that sex however important or unimportant it really is, It is on every single forum page on this site, I’m just saying I think its a bit excessive. This should be a Catholic Answers Forum, not the Catholic Sex Asvisor.

I am also curious as to How Jesus was a Sexual being?! He was human and I am sure that he must have had sexual urges, but I certainly have never read anything of this in the bible, only in the DaVinci Code.
Hebrews 4:15 says that He was tempted in all respects as we are, yet without sin. ALL respects include sin, as many humans find these temptations the toughest to resist (as evidenced by the volume of sexual threads on these forums).

Satan would not have bothered to tempt Jesus with sexual sin if Jesus was not a sexual Being.

Humans are all sexual beings. A priest is a sexual being. He does not use his sexuality in the same way that a married man uses his (ideally), and a priest does not sin by practicing self-sex (ideally).

And that’s my point. MANY people struggle with these issues. Of COURSE they are looking for a way to justify sin–don’t YOU do the same thing when you give in to a temptation? Don’t YOU try to rationalize your sin and try to figure out a way that it isn’t really a sin, just a weakness or a physical urge or whatever.

Hopefully most Christians will eventually come to a place where they stop rationalizing or looking for affirmation of their sin, and they will admit that the Church and the Bible are correct and they will repent and seek reconciliation.

But some people aren’t at that place yet. They’re still seeking answers and trying desperately to hold onto their sin in the hopes that maybe it really isn’t sin, just a lifestyle or a genetic tendency or an environmental consequence. It’s just human to try to pass the blame along and not accept personal responsibility.

Yes, perhaps they really SHOULD attend Confession and work with a priest. But they aren’t ready yet! Everything and everyone in our culture tells them repeatedly that they aren’t sinning, that they’re normal and that it’s the CHURCH that is wrong! This kind of pressure is really hard to resist. If you don’t think it’s hard to resist, perhaps you are removed from it in some way. But most of us live in a world where every message from all forms of media, and all of the people we are with everyday at work or school or in social settings say that “anything goes.”

And when a believer tries to argue that there is a right and wrong, we are told to clean our own house first and fix our pervert priests. That shuts us up fast. It’s hard to stand up to this because it’s kind of true.

Doesn’t it tell you something that in spite of ALL the charisms given to them, along with the Holy Spirit’s extra work in their lives, and the sacrament of Holy Orders conferred upon them and the powerful prayers of Our Lady and saints like St. John Vianney and St. Anthony of Padua, that our priests STILL struggle with sexual temptations and give in to these temptations, even the most vile of these temptations?

Sexual temptations are darn powerful! We are foolish if we do not take these temptations very seriously and recognize their allure.

If a priest gives in, how much more likely it it that a layperson will give in, especially since most of us are, by necessity (job and family responsibilities), immersed in the world with all its lures?

Sexual sin is very real and more pervasive then we can conceive. To ignore it is like ignoring a pride of hungry lions in your house. Ignoring it isn’t the way to deal with the lions. It is surprising that more threads on CAF are not about sexual topics.

I think that a lot of the people on this board, especially homosexuals, are trying with all their hearts to find a way to avoid their nagging conscience and the Holy Spirit’s constant conviction in their hearts. Hopefully through discussions on CAF, they will gradually become more and more convinced that their sexual sins really are abhorent in the Eyes of the Lord, and they will repent and be reconciled and turn from their sin.

And those who aren’t beset with sexual sins must be patient and loving (yes, sometimes that love will be tough love!) with these fellow Christians. After all, we are all beset with sins of our own and would like to have others who don’t share our weakness treat us with patience and love.

True as long as we are still in this stinky earth, but after that we are no more sexual beings…

(Matthew 22:30):*
“At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.”
and a priest does not sin by practicing self-sex (ideally).
Please explain I thought lust is a sin no matter how…

(Matthew 5:2):
“But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

I apologize. I phrased that sentence very poorly. If a priest (or anyone) masturbates, he sins. What I meant is that a priest is not supposed to practice self-sex to relieve any sexual tension–it’s still sin.

There is no “REAL overcoming” of these issues in the manner of BP’s bottom–kill; not as long as we have flawed wills in mortal bodies. While it is awesome to go to Confession, it is not always available. Sometimes seeking valid advice is a necessary step.

Sex is a major part of being human; larger for most people than religion. So don’t be surprised that human beings talk about it. If you don’t like it, blame the general society, which assiduously keeps everybody’s furnace at white heat though its advertising and media.
I am also curious as to How Jesus was a Sexual being?! He was human and I am sure that he must have had sexual urges, but I certainly have never read anything of this in the bible, only in the DaVinci Code.
HE was a normal human being; so HE had a sexuality. But the Gospels never describe HIM behaving sexually; so anything written about that is prurient speculation. That HE never sinned is more than enough for us to think about in that matter.

ICXC NIKA!

Sex is a big part of life but if we spend too much time with the media, I guarantee we will be taught the wrong things.

That is why the Church gave us a simple formula to follow. Marriage is the answer for most of us. Some will remain single.

I know what it’s like to struggle with sin, but just like the alcoholic who needs to avoid those places and situations that tempt him, we need to stay away from movies and TV shows where people are simply fornicating and they are so happy. These fantasies should be removed so we can focus our thoughts on virtue. These fantasies will get in our way and make our turning away from it that much more difficult.

Faith without works is dead. We can talk about our faith, sure, but we have to act on our beliefs as well. We need to encourage one another.

Ed

This is assuming that sexual matters are ALL we talk about here and ALL some of us think about. That’s simply untrue. I don’t find any evidence that these issues “monopolize this website”. Same-sex marriage is a big issue in the country right now because of California and several other states, so of course there’s an uptick in discussions of that nature these days.

Your definition of faith is great, I don’t disagree. I said that ONE aspect of faith is resisting temptation. It’s an important topic. In fact, it’s INCLUDED in your #3.

So many good points.

I’ve changed my mind. :>

I think most of these sorts of posts on these topics ARE due to laziness (not checking in FAQs), and some of the other reasons I listed out earlier, but there’s perhaps a missing element to “just looking things up” in past threads. Many people seem to need to somehow personalize their quest for answers. That’s fair, understandable.

What annoys (and what I sometimes bring to God during my short evening exam) is the annoyance I fail to resist / convert / nurse when a poster seems intent on “unique-ifying” their struggle with “way too much information”.

Hey…most of us here are adults…we can read between the lines…and the younger readers don’t need to be subjected to drawn out details on someone’s struggle, especially with sexual sins. No matter how we got to our state of sin…the important thing, the only thing is that we return to our loving Father.

I think re-reading the story of the prodigal son’s own confession beautifully captured in the Gospels is helpful.

We’re weak, we struggle, we need the Sacraments, we need to pray, we fall…and hopefully we realize that we fall into God’s own hands, who is there to dust us off and give us our dignity again as free souls.

As a young person, I have to say that sexuality issues are a huge issue with my peers. I think what makes this such a sought-after issue and highly debatable is because our churches don’t do an effective job of addressing the problems. I hear more from my protestant counterparts about how their churches address sexuality issues than the CC. Sure, we have Humanae Vitae, but it’s not the same as having one’s priest talk about the issues, having church leadership address it in small groups, or having youth and young adult ministries address it to their members.

I remember going to protestant youth group when I was a teen and how the pastor addressed it frankly (albeit, appropriate for teens as well). He talked about the risks, the unintended consequences, and the spiritual consequences. I talked to my protestant friends more often about waiting until marriage than I did with Catholic friends. I get the impression that Catholic churches almost shy away from sexuality issues and don’t see it as “their place” to address it. Granted, I don’t think a priest should swoop down on someone who he knows is engaging in a particular behavior, but I do think as a community we have to talk about these things.

Can you imagine what it’s like to be the ONLY 20-something year old who never lived with their spouse before marriage, was still a virgin before marriage, had never gone to a strip club, didn’t rent pornography or view it with their partner, or didn’t feel the need to share saucy tidbits of what I did (or didn’t do, in my case) last night with someone I barely knew? Granted, I didn’t flaunt my goody-two-shoesness around either, I was rather reserved about many of these things but after a while people start to get the drift.

You’re pretty much a freak. I think we need to talk about this issue, but approached in a problem-solving manner and heavily emphasizes spiritual ramifications. Is that so hard? I don’t like to put it this way, but there were times where I felt ashamed for NOT having been sexually-experienced! Thankfully my husband didn’t feel that way.

This is certainly not a management issue. The Catholic Church has not shyed away from sexual issues and it has been attacked for all of them. To the secular world - especially the media, the Church is not only wrong but a bit crazy.

Condoms - The Pope went down to Africa and told a country full of people, some of them dying of AIDS, that condoms won’t solve their problems.

Same-sex marriage - The Church is opposed to this phenomenon and is the primary labeled “enemy” of proponents.

Abortion - From day one, the Church was opposed. But what did the radical feminists and pagan media say? “Keep your beliefs off my body!”

Artificial contraception - No condoms, no Pills and nothing artificial. You want to make a commitment to someone before man and God, and you mean it, then commit. Kids are a blessing not a burden.

No-Fault Divorce, embryonic stem cell research, in-vitro fertilization. The Church has addressed all of the above.

You may notice that the majority of our social problems revolve around a misuse of our human sexuality.

Let’s make a list of things to avoid to clear our heads of the have sex 24/7 (with whoever) media message.

It would also be helpful to find a Catholic Radio station in your area, or one on the internet.

Sending a pope around is not addressing the issue effectively down in the trenches.

My Protestant confirmation classes and youth fellowship groups discussed drugs, sex, music, everything.

My father delivered sermons on sex, marriage, contraception from the pulpit. These things were then discussed in the Fellowship Hall over coffee afterwards. It made me embarrassed at times cuz he was my father, but it meant that the congregation heard his point of view regularly (once a year, anyway, on each topic) and discussed the topic.

Simply telling kids, “Learn this CCC” is not as effective, IMO. Kids struggle with these issues, and in today’s media and information accessible world, to simply assume that kids will follow your teachings without working real hard to justify and explain its rationale and effectiveness is to misunderstand young thinking people.

Well said, sir!
And may I add: we should not shirk from speaking up for our Faith.
We must ALWAYS fight the good fight!

spunjalebi ,

Very well said and put. Agree on all counts.

Our parish just started teaching our 10th-12th graders and we were happy to see that it was well attended and the interest was high. Our DR is a saint and she’s expanding it next year.

Help is on the way.

And many thanks and prayers to you for being what may seem like the lonely hero. You aren’t alone and you receive tremendous graces from your struggles to live purely.

What a joy it was to read your entry. You will receive God’s tender help. Never doubt it. Ask for His help when the road gets tougher.

This is a management issue from the context of community. When I was in RCIA, there was a heavy emphasis on seeing the church not just as the great big huge RCC, but also as part of the Christian community. I have noticed within Catholic communities that many of these topics don’t get the attention and approached in the right manner to nip a lot of these issues in the bud. So what if the big huge church that everyone knows of sets out a public decree? It’s meaningless if your local priest doesn’t take the initiative to talk to engaged couples about these issues, or if there aren’t support groups for those struggling in churches, or if you don’t get that sense of community where you can actively trust that when you go to your church for help, there will most certainly be some.

My husband grew up in a heavily Catholic rural area and went to Catholic school almost his whole life. He told me that oftentimes when these topics finally did get discussed, it was too little too late. When sex education doesn’t start until after 14 and young girls are getting abortions so they can remain in Catholic school, there is something very wrong.

Thanks Edward H 🙂
