Too sick to go to Mass?

I have a very bad cold. I feel okay, but every now and then I go into a coughing fit that I have a very hard time stopping. My glands are swollen and my ears are blocked. Being on immune suppressants, I can’t stand it when people go to church and they are sick. In fact, that’s probably where I got this cold. 🙂

The thing is, my son just received his First Communion last week, and I really want him to go to church. My husband isn’t Catholic and getting him to take the kids to church is hard. One of my older kids is sick too, but the other is still in bed, so I don’t know how she’s feeling.

I probably should stay home, just in case I’m contagious, but I really want to go to church. What would you do?

(What really stinks about this is that I have to go 1.5 hours out of town to pick up building supplies for a bathroom we are having work done on. I’ve been in bed for the last two days and the contractor needs this stuff tomorrow. I can’t, in my own mind, miss Mass and then go pick that stuff up (no, husband can’t do it. He doesn’t know what we need), but I really don’t want to get people at church sick since we all sit so close together.

Your thoughts? Thank you.
 
I would ask DH to step up and take the children to Mass.

I would also write down what we needed and ask him to go to the building supply store or I would call the store and have them prepare everything so my DH just had to pay and pick up.

Or I would call the contractor and reschedule.

I would not go to Mass if I thought I was contagious and I also had a sick child with me.
 
Please stay home if you are sick. It is extremely rude to potentially expose others when you have a very valid reason for sitting out Mass this week.

It’s not about being so desperately ill that you can’t physically make it there, but about showing courtesy to the other parishioners who may be newborns, elderly, immune-compromised, etc.

Thanks to you and the other poster who posted advice. This is how I feel as well (being immune compromised myself due to an autoimmune disease), however I can be VERY scrupulous and I doubted this morning how sick I really am. I need to cut that out and realize that God’s okay with me missing church if I’m sick.

I was able to get two of my three kids to church, (ages 9 and 15 - the healthy ones) and I’m canceling the contractor for tomorrow. I’m going to fix the kids lunch, and then I am going to put my jammies back on and take a nap.
