I think Gep Gambardella from “The Great Beauty”

Then maybe Marty from “Marty”

And I think Filumena Marturano from “Marriage Italian Style”

Also I think Javier Rodriguez from “Traffic” as an honorable mention.

Sam Diamond - (Peter Falk) in Murder By Death

Sherlock Holmes - (Jeremy Brett) in the 1984 series The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes
 
Brett is the best indeed. Better than Basil Rathbone in my view, who is no. 2. For whatever reason, I can’t stand the new updated version. It is just cartoonish, silly dialogue, plots. I recently bought the Brett collection on DVD. Never tire of them. Classics.

  1. Breathless - Belmondo and Seberg - too cool for words
  2. La Strada / Le notti di Cabiria - Giulietta Masina - really simple sweet performances (almost not acting)
  3. La Dolce Vita / 8-1/2 - Marcello Mastroianni - too cool for words
  4. Bogart and Bacall in anything - too cool for words

I liked Cabiria’s character just a bit more than I liked Gelsomina.

I do like Marcello in 8 1/2 too.

I watched Marcello do an interview. His personality is 180 degrees different. He even said “I was basically playing Fellini in both of those movies.” He is really soft spoken, demure, shy even. I was shocked. (sorry to say I think I like him better in the movies - isn’t that horrible ;))

Just watch the scene in “Rocky IV” when Adrian arrives in Russia for Rocky’s fight.

And then watch Rocky Balboa and Creed.

This is love.

There may be a little bit of sentimentality at play here. Aliens was the first R-rated movie I saw in a theater, and it made me an instant fan of Sigourney Weaver.

Ethel Waters as Petunia (Mrs. “Little Joe”) Jackson in Cabin in the Sky

Totally convinced me she was actually in love with Eddie Anderson. She had certain facial expressions that bespoke of a secret language between the two … both when she
was enjoying him … and when she was jealous.

I love that this character had a deep prayer life for others which was portrayed unapologetically.

Jennifer Crystal Foley as Pat (Mrs. Roger) Maris in the TV movie “’61”. Billy Crystal’s daughter got a cameo part in this “boy’s club” sports film … but in her few moments lit up the screen. Her agony in watching her man get hated on while she could only watch in silent support, and her trials in raising children of an often absentee husband (road job) whose fame and celebrity gave them problems “back home” was SO well played out. I’d like to see her again.

Shannon Bolin as Meg (Mrs. Joe) Boyd from “Damn Yankees”. Often better known in her later days as the lady who did the Denny’s commercials (and called the restaurant “Lenny’s”) … Bolin’s part in Damn Yankees contains the soul of the picture (yet is often cut out in TV adaptations of the long movie). Her song “There’s somethin’ ‘bout an empty chair …” is a tear jerker. She plays the abandoned wife … who nevertheless believes in her “straying” (to secretly play baseball) husband’s promise to return.

Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) in The International - just an intense, anxious character from the first shot of the film, as he confronts the immunity of corrupt entities
Joker (Heath Ledger) in The Dark Knight - Not only was this the role in which Ledger was lost, but despite his villainy, the character is actually more in tune with govt corruption than anyone else
Jesus Christ (Jim Caviezel) in The Passion of the Christ - number one, it’s Jesus - what better character. But Caviezel’s portrayal was masterful and intense.
 
Charles Morse (played by Anthony Hopkins) in The Edge

Atticus Finch (played by Gregory Peck) in To Kill a Mockingbird

Lucy Pevensie (played by Georgie Henley) in the Chronicles of Narnia movies
