Man, this is so irritating to me. My reasons for not giving through charities like the Gate’s is because they are so firmly entrenched in the pro death movement, which is not in the top 5 list of reasons. It takes research to find organizations that support life and feeding the hungry. I do give, there are organizations like cross catholic solutions, Mary’s meals, Feed the poor, that do a lot of good without pushing abortion.

Huffington Post is very far left, so why use it for a source???

Does being far left mean that the story is less credible? Are they somehow misquoting Bill Gates?
If the story was from Fox News (or someone even futher right), would you consider the story credible? As for the Gates, I would rather support someone who is not pro-abortion. 🤷

The best way to bring people out of poverty is Capitalism, free markets, free enterprise, economic freedom, and political freedom.

Do you agree with Bill Gates’ assertions? This is what the thread was supposed to be about.
Nope.
  1. International aid doesn’t work. TRUE.
If it did no one would be asking for it.

Remember the book “The Ugly American”…it was true then…it is true now.
  1. Governments in poor countries are corrupt. TRUE
It is not uncommon for more than half foreign or private humanitarian aid to be stolen by the local governments.
  1. People need a hand-up not a hand-out. TRUE
Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day…TEACH him HOW to fish and he can feed himself for the rest of his life.
  1. There’s plenty of need here in my own country. TRUE
…and it has been increasing since “the War on Poverty” began 50 years and billions of $$$ ago. Something is wrong here…
  1. I can’t afford it. VERY TRUE
But if you say that…better get ready for the guilt trip

“It is more blessed to give than to receive,” That is true on a spiritual level but it does not work that way in this world. The givers are never blessed; the more they give, the more is demanded of them; complaints, reproaches and insults are the only response they get for practicing the virtue of Charity.

Perhaps because the very far right may not care about easing poverty at all? Or are concerned about chasing the almighty dollar and profit for those already obscently rich that that could likely be their primary raisond’etre.

👍 👍

So, why do we still have extreme poverty?
First, because not everyone lives in a country that is Capitalistic, has free markets, and has free enterprise. Not everyone has economic and political freedom.

Second, poverty is relative.

Then, why is there such a large degree of homelessness here in America?

I thought we were talking about poverty? Nonetheless, America doesn’t have free markets, free enterprise, and the people don’t have economic freedom.

All of the “excuses”, just like his contrary assertions, can be true sometimes and false sometimes. So, basically, they cancel out and his statements add to zero.
