Just confirming my own opinion regarding criticism directed at our priests and bishops:

If each Catholic practices their own faith in good conscience and lives it, supports our beleaguered priests and bishops and does the work of God in our daily life we can collectively make a huge difference in this world. Be consistent in support of politicians who uphold life from conception to natural death, sign up to do some volunteer work in the commmunity or thru your church, get involved instead of playing armchair quarterback which helps no one. Each one of us has full responsibility to teach Christ’s message in this world.

My priest regularly explains at the end of his homily that non-Catholics should not present themselves for reception of Jesus in the Eucharist, but invites them to attend some classes to learn more about our faith. He goes on to say that Catholics who are not in good standing with the Church, ie missing Mass, sins against the 10 Commandments but invites them to attend the scheduled Reconciliation before each and every daily Mass, or call for appt. This is just one priest. There are over 400,000 working in Christ’s vineyard today.

This is the issue of concern to me, not one individual person’s remarks. I should not have quoted another poster, so I have learned a good lesson in that regard. Peace.

WHO is ultimately responsible for allowing the climate of dissent and heresy that abounds in the Church today?
THE BLAME GAME
I just viewed this video which prompted me to check the CA forum.

Voris claims Sr. Keehan (NOT a ‘nun’, but a woman religious) has an income of $1 million! How can that be? How can this be verified?

As to dealing with bishops (and priests) who do not speak out against abortion and other moral evils, each indidvidual can do only so much:
  • plead with your pastor to instruct during the homily
  • give him material from Priests for Life on how to relate pro-life issues to the homily from the readings for Mass
  • ask if you may pass out pro-life literature (we had problems at the last election, even though our materials presented both sides and most of the issues; missed one, the death penalty, so pastor did not think it was adequate)
  • write to the CHANCELLOR and your concerns including support for your bishop, if you indeed do. If there are problems, praise your priest, but also be specific in any problems
  • If problems persist, you might request a meeting with some of the diocesan staff. That is how they would prefer to do it (in my experience) and then will, hopefully, pass on to the bishop what needs to be addressed.
It IS difficult to live with the blatant neglect of teaching what is serious sin, including missing Mass on Sundays. The press wants to play up the sexual abuse scandals, which indeed are egregious, BUT what is even more egregious is desecrating the Eucharist.

Probably all of us knows one parishioner who presents him/herself for Holy Communion, who is an advocate of abortion on demand. What heartbreak it is to realize how this injures the Body of Christ – all of us! We pray and pray for them to repent. Even worse is when we see our priest allow them to serve on committees and possibly lead others astray. What ARE we laity to think? How can we but conclude that our pastor is not shepherding us they way we need to be?

Sad times, sad times. But as was stated previously, it is our job to be missionaries to our fellow Catholics, to be informed as we can be about our religion, to be witnesses for the Faith.

God will deal with the Bishops in due time. I sometimes cringe when Voris or others are highly critical of Bishops, but how else would we know what sorry state our Catholic Church in America is in? I pray their zeal will not endanger their souls in that effort.

Keep praying for Holy Mother Church!

Mimi - So nice to see you on the forum again. Blessings!

I found this dated blog which states:
CHA does not represent patients or the poor. Their board is composed of, and Sister Carol represents, the very highly compensated chief executives of large health care conglomerates throughout the country. Lay-led corporations such as San Francisco-based Catholic Healthcare West and St. Louis-based Ascension Health run dozens of hospitals across numerous states which at one time were directly operated by religious orders.
The executives at these companies are compensated as you’d expect the heads of large corporations to be compensated. In the last year figures are available, the head of Ascension Health made $1,756,790 plus $599,744 in deferred compensation and benefits. Catholic Health East’s top exec made $1,185,000 plus $693,000 in deferred compensation and benefits. Both execs are on the board of CHA, where they are joined by numerous execs from similar health systems.
Sister Carol is a former longtime health executive herself, and her compensation at Catholic Health Association is $856,093. This in an organization whose expenses are only $17,660,797. Three other employees at CHA each make more than $300,000.
This was written in 2009, so I assume she got a raise! 😃

Sr. Keehan was awarded the Cardinal Joseph Bernardin award in 2006 because:
of “her extraordinary contributions to creating common ground between church leaders and government officials, organized labor and Catholic health care providers, the rich and the poor,” according to the citation presented to her.
Although sometimes hard to hear, even with their criticism, I think Real Catholic TV does a service to the faithful. The truth is what needs to be promulgated now after so much error and scandal in the Church.

The tacit approval of some of our bishops by their non-disciplinary actions, imho, is causing as much harm as those who blatantly disobey.
