I don’t think I’ve read the article (I’ll get to it), my favourite has to be (and some folks do this) “I can go straight to God”! and then you also have the “It’s not like I’ve ever murdered anyone”. I feel like there is really a lack of humiliy there.

Adam, your favorite is in there!

Pelagia, thanks for posting this!

I am sure at one point or another most of us have used an excuse in the article to avoid the sacrament. All I say is I feel less spiritually burdened after i walk out of the confessional.

They missed my big one. Social anxiety kept me from confession for nearly a decade, from my mid-teens to mid-20s. A deep need for God’s grace brought me back, but it was a very difficult process. Because I’m an introvert with moderate social anxiety, going to confession was daunting for me. I eventually solved the problem by developing a relationship with a regular confessor who knows me well.

I think my most common on is a variation of No. 6 (“My sins are too big to be forgiven”) as well as the “Bonus” (“I’ll just commit these sins again”).

When a sin becomes a habit, one can get disheartened and come to believe that they are just wasting God’s time and grace by repeatedly showing up to confess after falling into sin yet again. But I am learning that God’s grace is efficacious even if I don’t see the results right away with my own eyes. Sometimes where he works first in us is not on the sin we are personally most concerned with. I keep in mind something Father Mike at Ascension Presents said in a video – that whenever we feel the need to go to Confession, it is the Holy Spirit calling us home. It is up to us to accept that invitation.
