thanks fro posting this…I had completely forgotten that!
 
Buster Keaton deserves a mention, as well. His early silent films are masterpieces of motion, pathos, and “gags.” His “The General” is a must see.

This is difficult but I’ll try.

Robert Bresson (greatest director in the history of the medium in my opinion).
Andrei Tarkovsky
John Ford (I can’t watch his movies often, though, as I find them extremely depressing).
 
Alfred Hitchcock
Cecil B. DeMille
Majid Majidi (an Iranian director with award winning films like Children of Heaven, the Color of Paradise)

I would add a fourth:
Akira Kurosawa
 
Yeah, it is almost impossible. Three? Wow…

Oooh, I hate this! It’s so unfair…but then there is also:

Coppola, Lean, Demme, and Wyler!

Sorry, I just couldn’t stop at three!

But I suppose if I had to rank them, we could find a top three:

My top two are easy:

William Wyler and John Ford

My third, well I’ll put Wyler again. As Gore Vidal said his films are “just full of life”.
