I’m currently protestant but feeling a strong pull to the Catholic faith. I need someone smarter than me to talk to this about, but being from the southern bible belt, I’m finding a lot of opposition in getting questions answered. I found this site and it’s amazing! A lot of questions have been answered, questions that I’ve been dealing with since a teenager. A little back ground…
I grew up traditional Methodist, which wasn’t too far removed from the Catholic Church as compared to other denominations that I’ve tried over the years. You name it, I’ve tried it out (Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, pentecostal, etc, etc…) Matter of fact I’ve been in search of the holy grail of the perfect church. One of the things I discovered is how different one denomination verses another is. If as a protestant, sola scripta is my/our sole authority, then how can there be so many different interpretations/revelations of what a church should be and should teach? I see too much opportunity for the Devil to deceive people through this inconsistency. If the Bible is our sole authority, then how come ours is missing the Apocrypha books? Did the Church have it wrong for almost 1500 years?? “Faith Alone” is shot down by James 2:24, and Luther almost removed this book as well. There goes two of the main pillars of protestantism. There were also other things that didn’t line up with I’ve been taught verses what is clearly taught in scripture like “work out your salvation with fear and trembling” etc. I did look into the Catholic Church in as much as what protestants told me and teachers such as MacArthur, Sproul others said, which were never positive. Growing up traditional Methodist, we were always pro Catholic, so here is yet another division. I finally decided to see what Catholics had to say about Catholicism and WOW was it different. Then I discovered this site and much of the above mentioned issues were answered. I’ve studied the Bible for years and have come to find out that I agree with what Catholics believe more than protestants. Now, I said all this to get to what’s really still hanging me up. It’s not the dogmas about Mary, praying to saints, purgatory and other issues that hang up most protestants, because I can see it in Scripture (thanks to Catholic Answers!) It’s simply this… How come I’ve seen God move in such amazing and powerful ways in the protestant church (only some of them of course)? I’ve seen the power of God first hand in my own life several times (Thank you God for your mercy and grace!). I see things like protestant churches having more of an entertainment value in a lot of churches, and if people aren’t getting a “good show” then they head on down the road. Of course I understand that we are sinful people and this happens, but in spite of all that, God still moves and does amazing things. I’m seeking the truth, the whole truth. If I should be in the Catholic Church, then that’s what I want to do. I want to be obedient to what God wants. I need a lot of prayer and advise as what to do. Even if its prayers only, I’m still reaching out. I want to be the best father, husband and man of God that I can be and do whats best for me and my family.
Thank you for your time!
Yours in Christ,
Bill

Bill, I know it can be hard and uncomfortable.

I was once down a very similar road. Yes God does great things through the Protestant church as much as He can. However they are missing out on the “holy grail” which you speak of, the body and blood of Jesus given in the Eucharist.

It is what led me into the Catholic Church.

I couldn’t believe that Jesus would lower himself to enter common food and become our nourishment. It is most-glorious and beautiful! Protestantism may be good but in the end, they are lacking this heavenly food.

Jesus does say in John chapter 6:

“He who eats the flesh of the Son of man and drinks his blood lives in me and I in him. If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.”

These words hit me so strong. The Holy Spirit convicted me that the Catholic Church was His true home.

Once you put your faith in this, the other teachings and uncomfortable issues get so much easier. I speak from experience.

Message me by this forum and I’ll do my best to help you. I joined the Catholic church a year ago and it was a wonderful yet difficult journey. I had many questions but I was also lucky to have someone who had been there to answer my questions. I can also recommend a few resources as well.

If I can help you, please let me know. It’s important to have a few friends to help them during this journey.

wow how cool are you and welcome home. I understand where you are coming from since I was a former Methodist turned charismatic and now I am home. I guess I am not sure what you are thinking of when you mention God moving in Protestant Church services so I am guessing you might mean healing and miracles? There are many wonderful Charismatic Catholic groups one can join. Also there are many noted and approved healing sites such as Lourdes etc. I would try to read and learn about them. Remember to be a saint, one has to have at least 2 verified miracles and with the vast number of saints - that’s a lot of miracles!
Again the Catholic mass has a miracle every time in that ordinary bread and wine become the body and blood or our Lord! Healing and miracles don’t have to be in some service to be a big show for everyone to see. I hope this helps and welcome home!

Bill,

Good luck with your journey. I’ve been down the same road before and I converted from Methodism after being born and raised in and had remained a practicing Methodist up to my conversion.

I came in during one of the first waves of the priest sex scandal back in 2005. In your search for the “perfect church” don’t let the actions and behaviors of the everyday people in the pews influence your decision. I’ll tell you now, you’ll meet a lot of lukewarm Catholics that practice their faith sporadically. You’ll meet Catholics that don’t agree with all the teachings. And then you’ll start to think about how that differs with all the good people in the pews at the church down the street and that may leave you feeling confused.

But when you start to look at what the Church teaches you will find the perfect faith and it is in the Catholic Church. No matter how well it is lived some of the doctrines and beliefs taught in Protestant churches fall short of the complete and total truth. It’s only in the Catholic Church that you can find the fullness of truth taught. That fidelity to the truth despite the shortcomings of the people in the pew and some of its leaders has remained within the Church from the 1st century. That knowledge has to be your guide in finally choosing where to call your spiritual home. Like many on this board God led me to the Catholic Church and I’ve been extremely happy here in my new home.

Bill,

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for sharing about yourself.

With regards to what you mentioned about Protestants receiving great blessings, and feeling the power of the Lord in their lives…God is faithful to those who love and obey Him! The Lord will not put aside someone who is faithful to prayer and seeks to be sanctified. He blesses them in many ways. Of course, it is always more glorious for me to hear when someone inquires of and then follows the desire to become Catholic!

Being a" cradle Catholic" and loving the Lord and feeling so blessed in knowing and believing in all the treasures that Our Lord Jesus Christ left to us, I am overjoyed to see someone seeking in coming to the faith that contains, (I believe with all my heart) the fullness of faith.

May the Lord and His Mother lead you on your journey!

Peace,

Dorothy

Hi Bill, aqnd welcome to CAF. You ask some important questions, and there are some wonderful Catholics here that can help you. I would recommend, however, that you also seek out a local Catholic parish, speak to the priest, and perhaps enroll in RCIA.
Whatever you choose, God bless you in your journey.

How come I’ve seen God move in such amazing and powerful ways in the protestant church (only some of them of course)? I’ve seen the power of God first hand in my own life several times (Thank you God for your mercy and grace!).

The reason one sees this is actually addressed in the Catechism.
819 “Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth” are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: “the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements.” Christ’s Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him, and are in themselves calls to “Catholic unity.”

Since, these other communities contain these elements of truth, AND since each community will have people of great faith and (most importantly) great Love, it should be expected that one can see God work in great ways.

However…One must be careful about how much credence one gives to some of the things one sees in some of these other communities…Here I am speaking mainly of the more evangelical and “gifts of the spirit” oriented bodies. In these, I am reminded of Jesus words in Mt 7:21-23.
21 "Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’
There are communities that become so focused on these kinds of “signs” that they can miss the larger more important and more subtle truth. The need for humble Love as the core and source of everything else.
Look at the Judgement passage in Mt Mt 25:31-46…Not one mention of a “gift”. The only things mentioned are acts that spring from Love. From a world view that sees Christ in others because Christ is in us.

The Catholic church has held this view for 2000 years. It is the largest charitable organization on the planet - but God has not denied us the “gifts” either. But when one sees them in the Catholic Church they are generally much more subdued. More is made over them by others than by those “gifted”.

I was away from the Church for many years and finally came home.
It is my sincere hope that you will soon join us.
The Catholic Church, I believe, will fulfill all that you seek in Christ.

Peace
James

Welcome to the CA Forums.

Try this site, and talk to potential converts who are exploring the CC…and you can gain insights into what they are experiencing also…chnetwork.org/

You can check the site’s forums and convertion stories.

I will leave you with the words of John in John 6…56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.

I’m very thankful for everyone’s hospitality and kind responses. All of which, I value tremendously. I will clarify that when I mention God moving and doing great things in some of the protestant churches, it was really in reference to what God has done in individual lives through the respective churches. I guess I wish things were a little more black and white, if you will, but obviously God is not bound by those two colors :-). I will definitely take some of you up on additional advise.

James, This really helps a lot! I needed this. Some of the churches I visited that focused on “gifts” mainly focused on tongues as a mark of salvation which I knew right off was wrong. I can see that without the authority of the Church (Catholic), where beliefs like this go unchecked.

You’re a Catholic waiting to happen; it’s already happened, truth be known. 🙂 Study history, listen to all sides objectively, giving everyone a fair shake. You’ll end up Catholic.

Paul tell us in the letter to the Romans that God is impartial. Well if Paul was telling the Jew, who thought that they had everything God had to offer because of circumcision and Paul says OH NO those outside the Covenant are circumcised of the heart and He is their God too…have things changed so much. God is the God of the Jew, Greek, Gentile, Barbarian, and all others. Those that are outside the Covenant are not necessarily outside the Covenant and you see God doing for them what Paul was telling the Jew. Those Gentiles are a law unto themselves without the law. Welcome home.🙂

Thanks, Chad. I am at the stage where I’m seeing all the shortcomings of the protestant church. Once you know the truth or more truth than previously known, then it is hard, if not impossible, for me to continue down the same path and blatantly turn my back on the truth. The Methodist church will always been dear to me, but is still not right and possibly heading in the wrong direction. The last one I went to would set up communion on the street and treat it like a lemonade stand, which bothered me, since communion was always special to me not to mention that Paul specifically warned us against such things. Thank you for sharing your story with me. It helps.

John chapter 6 is very profound and is the single chapter and verse that began my original search for the truth. Jesus goes on to call it “true food and true drink”. This profound scripture is where it all started for me. Thanks for sharing!
