Torn between two careers

Hey everyone
I am torn between two careers. I am trying to decide between starting my own concrete staining and engraving business or being a mechanic. I know that which ever I choose I will do the other as a part time hobby. I just cant decide which to do as my primary career. I am getting my certification in the concrete stuff (week long seminar)and taking a short course in small business management and I am getting my automotive degree. So to do either one I will be doing the same school path. I have prayed about it a lot and I feel total peace about both. Could God be basically telling me that either one is in his will that its up to me which I choose? I love both careers equal so its a matter of me choosing which is my primary career and which is just my hobby.

Last year I was in a situation where I had a great job with risk we would loose the contract or going to another job that seemed like it would be great but would have limmited my future carreer growth. I prayed and prayed and prayed. I even went to church outside of mass and prayed. Then I made my decision evidently I made the wrong decision because that job was canceled and I as forced to take the other path. Then the opportunity came up again and I went for it and was offered the job again followed by the organization again canceling the job. At this point in time I was starting to get the hint. So I know what you are going through.

By the way when I was your age I was going to be a pilot. I was shure of it. God had other plans then. Then I just started taking the jobs that seemed to be thrown in front of me. While at the time these careers didn’t seem to be realted, they built on each other and prepared me for greater opportunities.

Your 21 right? With Social Security the way it is you can expect to work for another 50 or more years. You have plenty of time to experiment with various careers. When I started flying I found out it wasn’t as fun or glamorous as I expected.

With a screen name like catholic+racer I am guessing you have a bit more than 89 octane in your blood. Go with your passion.

When you talk about mechanics and concrete finishing my first thought was the specialty market of garage epoxy finishes. You may want to get into the inner circle of mechanics and build a network you can sell concrete finnishing to.

My guess is that if you start going the wrong direction you’ll be made aware of it.

I don’t know where you live, but which career would provide the most steady consistent work? That might be the one you want to focus on full time.

If I had to answer that, I would say that a mechanic would have steady work, and that the concrete staining and engraving would be more seasonal. So, maybe working full time as a mechanic and part-time in the concrete business would make the most sense.

Of course, my answer is based on where I live, the change of seasons, and the current state of building and construction. And, that I need an oil change and brakes.

Thanks for the advice guys! I think the best think for me to do is go to school and see what happens. And I am going to pray alot lol.

Can you learn both trades? Maybe be a mechanic and have the staining business as a side business? Maybe you will eventually be in a position of owning a business where you do both?
