I have a book that tells me the prayers but I can’t work out which bead is which, I looked up videos on youtube but they don’t tell you the beads or where to start and speak the prayers which is very distracting. Can anyone help please?

CAF member Miserissima has a link to powerpoint presentations of all the Mysteries of the rosary on her page. Check it out. The beads are highlighted as you pray.

Try this link. It’s a step-by-step guide and has pictures of the different parts of the Rosary.

You can listen to the Rosary being prayed here (and order a free CD, too, if you like):

catholicity.com/cds/rosary.html

ComePrayTheRosary.org accompanies its online rosary recitation with an image of a rosary upon which the corresponding bead is lit up during the recitation of each prayer. Maybe that would help. 🙂

This is all really helpful thank you. I do have another question, can someone please explain the sorrowful mysteries to me and when they should be prayed and do I say the regular rosary I said this morning and the sorrowful mysteries or one or the other?

The prayers we say are the same each day - what you are referring to as the regular rosary… but the mysteries we focus on are different. So, on Tuesdays and Fridays we focus on the Sorrowful Mysteries. There are five Sorrowful Mysteries… just as there are five of each of the Joyful, Glorious and Luminous Mysteries.

The rosary is split up into 5 sets of 10 beads [plus a few extra beads outside of the loop] … on each decade (this is what we call a group of 10 beads) we are focusing on a single mystery. There are different ways to do this, you may perhaps read a sentence and then pray the Hail Mary for each bead, or you may focus on the whole mystery while praying the 10 Hail Mary’s.

We are praying the Hail Mary prayer 10 times (using the 10 beads to keep track) while focusing on the first sorrowful mystery over the 10 beads, and then we move on to the next sorrowful mystery.

If any of this still isn’t making sense… please ask as it’s better to get a full understand and we don’t always explaining things in the best way. 🙂

Thank you, I prayed the wrong mystery…😦

Um, because of health problems my concentration in a little low, is there a good way to focus on the mystery that is easier for people with lower concentration?

I enjoy saying my rosary I find it calming

Perhaps you could focus on an image of the mystery while praying? Something similar to the images that are in the first link I posted… or one of the links that the other posters posted as some of those were lovely. There are many others all over the internet too.

Or maybe praying along with an audio file to help you keep the flow of the Hail Mary’s while focusing on the scriptural texts?

Maybe try a few different ways to see which way works better for you. 🙂

Btw, I realized that I hadn’t mentioned the single beads between the sets of 10 beads… but I hope you figured out their significance from the other posts.

One thing about the Rosary is that while the assignment of sets of Mysteries (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, Glorious) to days is traditional, it’s not something that’s set in stone. So you don’t have to worry about having prayed the “wrong” Mysteries. You’re free to meditate on any set of Mysteries on any given day as you desire.

THIS^^^

I pray the Mysteries that move me on any particular day. If I’m thankful I pray the Joyful, if I’m anxious or grieving, I pray the Sorrowful, if I’m in need of inspiration for my students, O pray the Luminous, etc…
The rosary is beautiful, comforting, and soothing. It’s a weapon against evil in this world.
I particularly love praying the rosary in the car. I often wonder as I ride past remote locales “I wonder if any person has every uttered a prayer on this spot before?”
Kind of cool to think about.
Peace.

EWTN has some wonderful Rosary DVDs – my favorite shows several stained glass windows showing the Mystery for each decade, and the recitation is easy to follow.

There is also a book that shows which bead on every page:

If you worry about getting it right too much, you may cease to enjoy saying the rosary, and that would be a shame.
Its perfectly natural to get it wrong sometimes, the reasons for saying it is what matters the most, not the order, frequency, or deep concentration.

Although its good to have some structure and routine in prayer, I don’t think we are expected to be too scrupulous.
