Cachonga,
Your seemed to have boiled down your “theology” (which you refer to as “Calvanist” (sp) - [Calvinism], by citing two passages from Genesis and one from the NT:
*Question - Why did God destroy the Earth in a great flood?
Answer - Because men were wicked, and all the thought of their heart was bent upon evil at all times (Gen 6:5).
Question - Did this change after the flood?
Answer - No (Gen 8:21)
Question - Can we come to God of our own accord?
Answer - No, we must be drawn by the Father (John 6:44)
The Calvanist position certainly appears to be supported by Scripture.*
A few questions . . .
- How did Noah and his family manage to escape the “total depravity of all men”?
- “Because men were wicked, and all the thought of their heart was bent upon evil at all times.”
I do not doubt that men have a tendency towards sin (which we define as turning away from God in our hearts and actions). But you go on to describe all mankind as “totally depraved” and “bent upon evil at all times”. I thought God created man in his own image.
- Do you really subscribe to the Calvinist view of “unconditional election”, where God’s choice from eternity of those whom he will bring to himself is not based on foreseen virtue, merit, or faith in those people. Rather, it is unconditionally grounded in God’s mercy alone. Conversely, God has also chosen from eternity to withhold himself from the unelect, and condemn them to face his wrath."???
How evil can a being be to create man, knowing ahead of time that he is going to destroy some of them and that those whom he destroys have absolutely no way of helping themselves by living according to God’s will. What a waste - and even simpler, what’s the point?
The OP wanted scripture to dispute the Calvinist view. I am happy to show there are many.
Psalms 17:21-25: “And the Lord will reward me according to my justice; and will repay me according to the cleanness of my hands: Because I have kept the ways of the Lord; and have not done wickedly against my God. For all his judgments are in my sight: and his justices I have not put away from me. And I shall be spotless with him: and shall keep myself from my iniquity. And the Lord will reward me according to my justice; and according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes.”
Acts 10:34-35: “And Peter opening his mouth, said: In very deed I perceive, that God is not a respecter of persons. But in every nation, he that feareth him, and worketh justice, is acceptable to him.”
1 Corinth. 15:58: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast and unmoveable; always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
Heb. 6:10: “For God is not unjust, that he should forget your work, and the love which you have shewn in his name, you who have ministered, and do minister to the saints.”
2 Tim. 7-8: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming.”
Matt. 16:24-27: “Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.*For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it. For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels: and then will he render to every man according to his works.”
Matt. 7:21: “Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
Matt. 5-3-12: “*Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. *Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land. *Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. *Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. *Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. *Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God. *Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. *Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: *Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.”
No one is saying that following the path of God is easy. On the contrary - Christ describes it as “taking up your own cross”.
But for God to have “predestined” a certain group of people who he will allow into heaven, without taking into account everything I just quoted from the bible - which is just a portion of what God and Christ want of man while man is on earth - makes God evil, vengeful, a sadist.
And
that does not describe my God . . .
