The term “Reason” is often used as shorthand for “the power of reason” - on which we rely to reach many of our conclusions - but it is certainly a mistake to regard it as the sole or even the most important form of knowledge. Beethoven wrote “From the heart, may it again go to the heart” and Pascal also believed “The heart has its reasons that reason does not know”.I would argue that Reason – an abstract idea or generality which we are expected to value for its own sake – is an idol. A result of that general revival of Plato’s polytheistic theology which began in the 13th century. Reason has nothing to do with our ability to reason (as a verb).
To save others from this error we must first avoid it ourselves.
Society, Democracy, Equality, Tolerance, Diversity… idols.
Ever wonder how many chinese people Mao sacrificed for The Chinese People?
It is obviously a mistake to reject the value of reason altogether like sceptics and nihilists. Fanaticism is the direct result of failing to consider whether the end justifies the means.
