So here’s a touchy subject. And ik its rather advance and gross but I think it’s important. Also please don’t judge I’m just wondering bc ive been asked about it by athisest and I’m not sure how to answere. Everyone loves bashing the Catholic Church for the unfortunate occasion of priests and rape. Now I know full well not all priests are like this, and I’ve always felt safe with my priests, however, it does happen, mostly with people who don’t have the intent of entering priesthood and more of what they think that can obtain through it. From what I have read it happens mostly with gay men, so here’s my question. How do we weed out those who wish wrong doing on others through priesthood. What mesures can we take to prevent this?

Seminarians, before they enter seminary, during their seminary training, and before their ordination, undergo rigorous psychological tests already to determine if they are going to be up to the tasking of what is required for being a good priest.

I think many orders have a psych eval for tell tale signs. Things about their upbringing, their past, etc.

But before the priest scandals, going way back in time:

Saints, and I mean many of them were grave sinners. Some owned slaves. Some abused people. Some killed. Some had children and never married. And the list goes on and on and on…Why? Because we’re all sinners. The saints were sinners.

So, what can we tell about a person who is about to become a priest? Can we tell they will fall, fail, and commit a sin? Even the most atrocious one? And the answer fairly/simply is, no. You can do your best to prevent it. But idoesn’t stop it. Heck, if the litigants and lawsuits arise trying to protect children, then why do they continue to hand condoms to children, while teaching them how to have sex in public education? It’s not to side track the responsibility in the Church for what happened. But the same populace, when it comes to abuse, do not rail against and up the education system. Or any of the wonderful hightlights of the erotic imagery industry, or eve prostitution rings where many children fall into. It does show a motivated bias, though be what was done is terribly wrong and shameful. But nevertheless, the convenient ignorance people have towards all the surrounding circumstances where their children are more vulnerable than with a priest, is abhorrent. I also add, many of the priests who abused children, were doing that during the wonderful free-expression-of-love 60’s/70’s. The sexual revolution, and telling the Church to change her view on sexuality, was a cover for these men who had predatorial infatuations for children. And that was around that time, it catapulted. People who come at the Church are no different than Napoleon who shot fire at a Hospital in Malta, while trying to battle the Turks at the sametime. Church, as many of the Saints and Pope’s have expressed is like a Hospital. But everyone keeps firing on it. People trying to change laws/rules how the Church is governed in her Magisterium. And in addition, how she view morality, especially with regards to sex. And now she is posed to deal with a problem of abuses, wherefore she was supposed to change her view of sexual morality. Pretty glaringly obvious this war hasn’t stopped either.

It has been present for centuries in spurts. Men coming into seminary, w goals of serving God and His church and maintaining celibacy.
In 1960’s, psychiatry voted that homosexuality is a normal life choice. 10 judges. 7 were gay!’
Applicants for priesthood, are told of celibacy!!!
Hetero or Homo sexual = no sex. Both types sin!
In ancient days, there was flagellation. Gross! Why inflict pain on oneself. What if priest was having sexual thoughts? Was it a diversion to break his sinful train of thought??? Penance. It’s all so sad. What happened to the Gift of the Holy Spirit of SELF CONTROL? What happened to purity? Purity is for all Christisns.
Don’t accept gay men?? Gay men aren’t suppose to be child molesters… strange!
If a gay priests assaults children= defrock snd send to jail. That would stop a lot of that behavior. They may get killed in jail. Presently, Pope Francis is sheltering such a priest to penance and prayer for life. Sorry, There is Justice on this earth. God is source of forgiveness and mercy. Defrock and send to jail.
I don’t think any pediophile enters priesthood to get close to innocents for sexual pleasure. I’m not in their head. Would a psych test help sort the bad from the good?
Till Christ comes, evil exists. It existed in the church since first 12 Apostles. There was Judas. He handled money…
Don’t use church as a babysitter. Get to know priests and employees. Teach kids to not allow inappropriate touching. And they are to tell you, even if priest says he’ll kill parents. Watch your kids behavior. Ask about pain? Heavens, it is so wrong!
Jesus help us!

Priests are human beings like the rest of us. Unfortunately, there will always be a percentage of the population who perpetrate these crimes. The priesthood is not immune to this. The horror of the scandal with the Catholic Church was not only what the individual priests did, but for many, more so that the Catholic Church tried to cover it up. Instead of shedding sunlight on it, the hierarchy of the church did things like reassigned the criminal priests to new places and paid off victims for their silence. That was even worse, in the opinion of many, than the initial crimes. The only way to correct this is from the top down. Gay people are no more likely to be pedophiles than heterosexuals.

The reason why all of this happened in this first place was the appointing of liberal-minded bishops, who were more concerned with being “fair” than with being faithful to the laws of the Church. The Church has rules set up to keep this sort of thing from happening, but modern seminaries, influenced by these liberal leaders, are too lenient in their admission process, and have failed (or, if we’re being 100% honest, refused,) to keep bad candidates out.

It’d be wonderful if Church authority could resolve this with some excommunications and a firmer sense of Catholic solidarity, but no one who’s been paying any attention to the higher-ups in the Church over the last several decades expects that to happen anytime soon. Frankly, I think the only solution now is firm, uncompromising, grassroots, Catholic holiness. This has worked before, and it’s producing some good, new seminarians now, but unlike quick, authoritative solutions, it takes a long time and a lot of effort, and the result is rarely dynamic or impressive, because so much time passes between action and result.
