So, I’ve been a faithful Roman Catholic from birth.
I follow all the church’s laws - abortion is an evil, sexual activity outside of marriage is sinful, contraception denies God’s call to be fruitful and multiply, and can lead to sexual activity outside of marriage since there are less worries of unwanted pregnancies, marriage is between a man and a woman…
however, I’ve dealt with health issues all my life (after the start of my periods as a pre-teen) that progressively got worse as the years went on. I went to every doctor and specialist my parents could think of, and always got the “Everything is fine” speech.
Finally, now that things have gotten really bad… I went to the only doctor I have never ever seen before… a Gynecologist. (I never went to see one because I didn’t want anyone prying in my privates.)
I found out I have progressively worsening endometriosis, uterine polyps, adenomyosis. I have a strong family history of cancer of all kinds on both sides… I am not sexually active so I have never had kids even though I’m in my 30s… and all this raises my risk of uterine cancer or ovarian cancer.
My doctor recommends a hysterectomy along with depo-provera until the surgery to stop my periods (because they’ve become so bad, I actually faint from lack of iron in my blood from all the bleeding.)
But of course, our goal is to be fruitful and multiply and we’re suppose to be against contraception.
My doctor said at my age, the fact I’m celibate till marriage, have no marriage prospects at this time, and the fact I have endometriosis - it all leads to a good possibility I’d never have children anyway. (those younger than me have infertility issues caused by endo)… and says my calling, if I ever got married, may be to adopt a child in need.
But doctors go based on medical things, not faith.
Where does the church fall on contraception and hysterectomies (permanent contraception) in cases of medical necessity?
