Maybe you are a Catholic of compliance, and not a Catholic who really knows God. You gotta get to know Him personally. You gotta “date” Him and fall in love with Him. You do know that we are called to be saints, right? Then why are you drifting away instead of embracing a life of sacrifice?

You have just been through a rigorous experience and a lot of times, people just need a time of what you might call mental flatness. You’ve used up your resources and then some and you just need a chance to replenish yourself.

*Do not give up in your spiritual life!!! *These are dangerous times for people–it is time to just say to God: I don’t have the energy and enthusiasm I usually have, but I know with Your help, I will have them back soon. Your prayers may seem “thin” and lacking to you, but your continued acts of friendship towards God will please Him *even more than *enthusiastic prayers said because you want to.

Consider yourself to have a sort of spiritual and mental flu and treat yourself as you would if you physically had the flu: drink plenty of nourishing liquids/spiritual reading; take medicine/pray the Rosary; go to the doctor/go to Mass; stay in bed/go to some daily Masses, pray in front if the Tabernacle, or say an extra prayer depending on your schedule.

I have gone through periods like this, and one does recover!

I Love St Frances’ answer above. 👍

Building on this idea of needing time to replenish…as well as times of great change…
You raise two points that may or may not be interconnected…
First, you are tired of your current friends. This may be just a symptom of your general exhaustion, or it could be that you are simply growing away from them. People come into and exit from our lives continually. Each has their purpose and we are hopefully enriched by the association. But do not be afraid of moving on.

Second, you are feeling distant from God. Again, this can be a symptom of a general exhaustion, but it is definitely not something you want to let go of. That said, there is nothing wrong with changing how you approach God. After all, we hope that we are growing in holiness and as we grow, things that felt right and were highly useful can begin to feel stale and pointless.
For example, a person new to conversion might feel deeply repentant and prayers of remorse and breast beating seem totally right and justified. Later, as the person reforms their life, these prayers will begin to seem less useful…not that we should stop them entirely…but his approach might lean more toward one of thanksgiving.

In both cases, and as “St Francis” has pointed out above, the key here is that you are simply exhausted. So take some time…just rest in God’s Loving arms. Keep your prayers simple and to the point. Keep attending mass and taking communion. You might also speak to your confessor about this problem…He might have some suggestions.

Peace
James

by moving on, you mean you are moving away to attend Grad school? From personal experience - good news - God is everywhere you go. You can’t run from Him 🙂 and also personal experience having moved far away from family/friends - some mystery I haven’t figured out to date that planes only fly one direction (in my case, East, where my family lives) and phones only transmit one way (again to them). So you’ll have to reach out to family and friends and make new ones. It’s part of life.

I know its part of life. its just i’ve been on this crazy grind since three years ago but it seems no matter how hard i try i can never achieve the results that i want. i just keep waiting and waiting for something sweet (i.e. success) but to no avail. words cannot explain how frustrating this is. i feel like God has abandoned me and i’m the lone ranger out there taking on the world. F that!

it feels like i’m doing the wrong thing by doing the right thing.

fwiw - another life lesson I’ve learned is part of the source of the frustration you are feeling may be approaching life without a plan. I took the pinball machine approach to life - me the pinball being batted around here and there letting the machine move me around. It ended up ok for me overall, but there had to have been a better way.

im really feeling a lost of hope…i know i’m only 21 … but it just sucks not getting what you think you need right now…the days feel like their one week long and drag on forever…
