Who controls our inner voice(s)? Why do the voices exist? Are these voices an extension of the self? Or, is the self is really an illusion which gives rise from these voices?

They are predominantly an extension of the self. We can have great control over what we think. It just takes discipline.

Keep in mind that I was talking about voices, not thoughts, but the voices may indeed result from thoughts.

If these voices are merely extensions of the “self,” who is doing the listening of these voices? Can we rationally say that the the listener, the self, is one and the same as the voice?

Yes, it is called the debate within. Decision-making. Various parts of the individual speaking, like ego and superego. Superego is analogous to conscience.

Voices are loud thoughts.

Do you think Multiple Personality Disorder has its roots in such a dynamic? Only an exaggeration into gross pathology.

You mean - when we ask ourselves a question - just whom are we asking it of? 😉
Was it not Augustine that said “angels are thoughts that think themselves?” (paraphrased.) As well as with evil thoughts methinks.

I guess by their fruits we will know from whence the thought comes - eh wot?

I believe that angels and Satan have access to our inner voices. So, I expect that these voices go beyond our thoughts and sense of self.

It is possible, but it really makes no difference in a practical sense. If a person with schizophrenia believes that meds will help him not listen to the devil, or if he thinks that meds will re-balance his internal chemistry so that he is not so confused with unacceptable thoughts, the result is the same.

Many of them are the internalized voices of your parents, teachers, and other important people from your childhood. You have to evaluate the messages they are giving to you, to see whether they fit. They were things that worked when you were two years old, but do they still work now? Maybe - maybe not. “Don’t touch that - it’s hot!” is still a valid message, but “Don’t try to reach that by yourself, darling; you’ll only trip and fall” is probably no longer valid. (These are just examples - I’m sure your voices, like mine, have a lot more to say than just that.)

they are a collection of what is embedded by the subconscious.

also, how does one distringuish these inner voices to be ‘devine’ (for lack of a better word) or different personality of the ‘self’?

according to?
According to the Holy Scriptures! We are temples of the Holy Spirit. Satan is also implicated as having powers that work through our “inner voice” in leading us into temptation. We are not alone!

so basically, “we are not human beings having a spiritual experience. we are spiritual beings having a human experience”?

That’s a really nice way of looking at things! Yes, ultimately we will end up as spiritual beings. This is a part of Judaism (Chabad) which basically states that in the World-to-Come we will have bodies, but afterwards we will return to our original spiritual state, with our spiritual state being elevated according to our good deeds in this world. Here’s an interesting quote:

Just as a blind man is unable to form any idea about colors, or a deaf person to fathom what it means to hear sounds… so the body cannot comprehend the delights of the soul… For we live in a material world, and the only kind of pleasure we can understand is that experienced through our body. But the joys of the spirit are everlasting and ceaseless. There is no resemblance of any kind between the enjoyments of the soul and those of the body.
-The twelfth-century philosopher-rabbi, Maimonides

So prior to Creation, we existed as “blank slate” spiritual beings? imo, the Fall from heaven has much more meaning then what is traditionally believed. In short, “god” and “devil” are just states of mind, and at one point, the first individual deviated from the “god” mind frame.

But I don’t want to derail thread. I am asking in all seriousness, how do you make the distinction between the different ‘voices’ in our heads?

Personally, I distinguish between the different voices based on what they suggest. I take what they suggest and match it to a virtue. Voices characteristic of LOVE are those that I trust and I allow to guide me.

how do you know that these are soley ‘divine’? how do you know that your past doesn’t influence your thought? hypothetically, what if you grew up not feeling loved, so wouldn’t you have some sort of mind frame to share what you yourself did not recieve?

If I understand you correctly, I think the best you can do is to follow voices characteristic of LOVE. LOVE changes everything! LOVE will then dictate over the state-of-mind characteristic of any developmental deficits.

What is love though? If you say live in a way guided by love, then to me, it sounds like you are walking on a thin line with such traits as compassion, charity, generosity, etc. Although these characteristics find themselves within the pyramid you broadly define as LOVE, they are distinct and natural to the ‘standards’ which allows for society to operate more smoothly… for lack of a better word.

These traits have surpassed things like hunting and gathering, which have become out dated in our civilization.
