Towering Mother of God statue arrives in St. John (Indiana)

Goosebumps cropped up on Jane Smith’s skin as a truck hauled an 8,400-pound statue Sunday into the parking lot at St. John the Evangelist Church.

The church, 10701 Olcott Ave., will keep the statue in the parking lot for about a year or two until it can find a permanent home at The Shrine of Christ’s Passion nearby, said the Rev. Sammie Maletta, priest at St. John the Evangelist.

The statue will draw thousands of visitors to the area and lots of positive energy, he said.

“All of this is how spirituality grows,” he said.

The 8,400-pound statue was the dream of former Oak Lawn resident the late Carl Demma, who wanted since the age of 9 to build a statue of Mary for all of Chicago to see after mistaking the statue of the Roman goddess of agriculture on top of the Chicago Board of Trade building for the Virgin. The statue, created by artist Charles Cropper Parks and his assistant Matt Large, has been on tour around the Chicago area since 1999 after it was blessed in St. Louis by Pope John Paull II.

Wow, my H and I have been to the Shrine of Christ’s Passion in St. John’s, looks like we will have to make another trip to see Our Mother…all 34 feet of her!

Yeah, she looks taller than 34 feet to me as well.
