Do any of the Eastern Churches have the tradition of regular processions? I know that in the Syro Malabar Church and many of the St. Thomas Churches, we have processions during great feasts, one of the largest being the Feast of Marth Mariam. The processions consist of laity and clergy, walking around the church or from one church to another. During the processions, laity bang drums, blow horns, sing hymns, carry banners of the church, carry icons of the Lord and many saints, crosses, and ceremonial umbrellas.
Surprisingly the Ethiopian Catholic and Orthodox, as well as other churches of similar custom in the horn of Africa have this same tradition of regular procession. A difference that I noted is that these churches also have a sort of liturgical dance that they do during the processions.
The Latin Church also has the tradition of procession for major feasts as well as other Holy Days. Though I’m not sure if they allow the use of instruments/etc during the procession, I’ve also never seen a Latin Procession in the United States. Perhaps the tradition wasn’t brought over to the states? I’m not sure, please do inform me if you have any information.
Something interesting to note, the processions may not look completely the same but if you look at some of the pictures below you’ll notice that all three churches who are so different, all carry the ceremonial umbrella.
