I forgot, what was your point in the first place?
That I hope to never read something written by you along the lines of;

“Show me in the Bible where you get this belief. I can’t affirm it if I can’t be shown it in the Bible.”

Something along those lines. The first sentence I don’t have a problem with, as there is nothing wrong with going to the Bible. It is the second sentence that the problem arises.

Just so I don’t get accused of misunderstanding you again; I am not saying that you have wrote the above, only that I will keep my eye out for it :bluelite:

God bless you

Is there a definitive list or a definitive document that contains all of what the catholic church refers to as ‘‘Apostolic tradition’’?

Am I right in thinking this must be a closed list?

Meaning no more can/could have been added to it as it is tradition that comes from the Apostolic era?

I’m all for tradition. While Scripture is the sole and final authority for matters of faith and contains all things necessary for salvation, it is impossible to understand Scripture apart from tradition.

Can you imagine someone with a Bible who knows nothing about Christianity trying to devise a theology without the guidance of the Church and the great theologians of history? It would be a disaster. At the same time, sola Scriptura keeps tradition in check.

Please show me where the Bible teaches about the Trinity? 😉 I think the Mormons on Catholic Answers don’t like me very much. 🤷 Do you want to co-labor together on the Mormon Forum site? ECT III 👍

All revelation ended with the death of the last apostle.

However, we continually review this deposit of faith to glean a fuller understanding of this revelation.

The better a movie is, the more you get out of it after repeated viewings. God’s revelation is so much deeper than the greatest movie in history that we will never comprehend the entirety of his revelation, but we must keep trying.

Thanks CR

Are you saying then that its not possible to go to a document and review what is apostolic tradition as this has been developed over time.

In other words, what we have now as Apostolic Tradition, doesnt look quite like the Apostlic tradition someone from say the 5th or 6th century would recognise?

The CCC incorporates Sacred Scripture & Sacred Traditional Teachings. that would be a good place to start. Also the Rites & Practices of the Church are based on Scripture & Tradition as well & they are also written down. you can also refer to the ECF’s

But to the best of my Knowledge there is no quick reference guide or a “Sacred Tradition for Dummies” book. I know it would be a boon to have one at least one with copious footnotes…

Tradition

What are your views on tradition? I believe there are traditions that need to be received by all Christians. And there are traditions that need to be rejected by all Christians.
I believe that there is one Sacred Tradition that the Church holds fast to, and has remained true to all the years since Christ and His Apostles walked the earth. There are other traditions that are well-meant but not part of the Tradition that comes from the Apostles. The rosary is one that should be embraced by all christians. There are others that run the spectrum, but any that contradict scripture as understood through Sacred Tradition should be rejected. The beliefs that are unique to protestantism are traditions that, although well-intended, do not advance the unity of Christian belief. To the extent these traditions tear apart the body of Christ, they should be abandoned. To the extent that protestant traditions pull us together, they should be practiced and passed on - e.g. the great love for Christ and the scriptures among the protestant communities is admirable and good.

Peace,
Robert

The CC makes a clear distinction between Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition as seperate sources which make up the deposit of faith. I believe most Catholics cannot name Sacred Tradition when asked. If Sacred Tradition is as valuable to Catholic Chrisitans as Sacred Scripture, please give me some of your favorite Sacred Tradition. I challenged another Catholic Christian, but I have yet to get a posting of Sacred Tradition that he is familar with. It is 10:46 PM Pacific Time. Let’s see how long it takes you to post Sacred Tradition that you love.

This is a sincere question. If you stacked up all Sacred Traditon in one pile, and compared it to Sacred Scripture in another stack, how much taller would the stack of Sacred Tradtion be to the Sacred Scripture pile? Maybe twice as tall, or 100 times taller, or 1,000 times taller? I really don’t know what sources in the Catholic Faith is considered Sacred Tradition as compared to just tradition.

Could you elaborate? I don’t really see how those passages support the doctrine of indulgences.
All who are members of Christ are members of one another. The suffering of one member affects the whole. Our sufferings can be applied for the benefit of other members of the Body.

It is necessary in discussions of this kind to distinguish between the Sacred Traditions (Teaching of the Apostles) and tradition with a small “t” (traditions of men, or human customs),

The doctrine of indulgences is part of the teaching of the Apostles. The abuse of that doctrine that was occurring in Europe prior to the Reformation was not part of Sacred Tradition. This is where the Reformation created problems - it was people that needed Reform, not the doctrine.
