Just a few questions. Having a missa cantata on All Souls.

Would you use all of the following, or are some omitted due to the somber mood?

Incence (at any point)
Candles at procession, offertory, canon, recession
Any of the small ceremonial actions

Why don’t you email the FSSP at their headquarters? I am sure one of their priests will be more than happy to answer your questions.

The Mass on All Souls Day is a Requiem Mass, so:

No incense at the Introit.
Incense at the offertory.
Only the celebrant, altar, and oblate are incensed.
Incense at consecration.
Yes to candles.
And more.

Here’s a sacristan’s guide for it from Sancta Missa.

I know incence is used at the catafalque after Mass. How about at the gospel?

None of these things are frivolous; they are ceremonial. There is a difference. It’s not like the altar boys/girls are doing interpretive dance! 😃

For me, the more ceremony used to honor the dead, the better. But I appreciate ceremony. And all those things are “traditional,” too. Leaving them out is quite modern, as far as I know. 😉
 
Small matter: Note the proper spelling of incense. Candles must be unbleached.
